Reality TV is NOT reality. Those who are upset by this show should recognize this. To a large extent Stephen was playing the role the Wife Swap people desired. That was a grave miscalculation. I’m not saying none of the views he expressed reflect his own but the abusive behavior certainly does not reflect his personality. The “presentation of self” is a subtle matter and cannot be achieved under duress, while being intentionally provoked, in the glare of cameras, and moreover filtered by nefarious editors whose intention is to appeal to the baser emotions of viewers.

Damo: Haven't you presented this same argument on another forum? Even in "playing a role", I would never, ever spout from my mouth the foul things Stephen did and especially not on national television when representing myself and my family. I understand how he may have been "playing along" but you don't go on national television to promote your agenda, wife, or business and agree to "play a role" that will alienate most of the population. To quote my redneck ancestors "it just ain't smart"! My redneck college profs taught about successful marketing, didn't yours and Stephen's?

Fowler choose to do everything he did. He gave the editors that material to work with. He constantly derogated Gayla any time he had the chance. He kicked Gayla out of his house because she wanted him to sing the National Anthem, play paintball, and use go carts. BIG DEAL! He was not provoked to constantly demean someone who is different from himself. If a small "rule change" causes duress, he has a lot of maturing to do as an adult.

Yes, the producers DO provoke you to act like a jackass, but if you are not a total moron, you will not become a pawn in their game, sacrificing your own reputation for their ratings. I graduated from UCLA during the dawning of the era of reality TV and, following a whole summer of "job hunting" (read: I looked on Craig's List at least twice), I realized rent was due and my parents were no longer footing the bill, hence my foray into the world of reality television. During my experience, the producers were ALWAYS trying to instigate drama, but I was not about to lose my cool and humiliate myself and my family back home. I have my grandfather's "wild Irish temper"…I can be pretty scathing and nasty, and there were a few people that I just wanted to smack the hell out of, but in the back of my mind, I kept thinking about how much my being seen in that light would impact my family. After seeing one of my episodes, my grandma even teared up and told me how proud of me she was. If, at only 21, someone who can be as caustic and nasty a wench as I can be is able to keep perfectly calm and collected after being liquored up, egged on by production assistants, and having cameras practically shoved up her nose, certainly someone of Mr. Fowler’s age and experience should have the ability to muster some kind of restraint in regard to resisting the urge to “let it all hang out”…or the intelligence, at least, to know that it could very well be an embarrassing and career-limiting move, regardless of his profession.

I saw 5 minutes of this show before I turned the channel thinking that Wife Swap had gone down the Jerry Springer road by telling the participants to carry on in the most ridiculous manner to gain viewership. Can anyone one human being be such a boorish twat as Fowler presented himself to be?

My surname is Fowler. My family and I enjoy playing paint ball, riding the go cart, camping, fishing, talking, laughing, and (gasp!)sharing. In every single war that has been documented since the Revolutionary War (my ancestors kicked yours asses!) there have been people in my family participating in some way. So in short my family fought and bled for the rights that your stupid ass is taking for granted. I have 2 brothers and a nephew currently serving in Iraq-2 Marines and 1 Army. Which means that every time that you're freaking dentally challenged people got caught up to your elbows in shit-mine was there to pull ya'll out. I am a 6th generation Texan. My children go to public schools and are straight A students. They are in no way damaged because they attend public school. I am a student nurse and my husband is an engineer. I work hard everyday to make sure that we leave the smallest carbon footprint possible, while still able to function as a family. So, you pompous Brit here is my solution for you and your family. Pack your fucking bags and get on a one way flight back to England we don't want or need your whining ass here. Do not pass go and do not collect $200.

I didn't see the show, but after reading about this man I became quite upset. I am an African American who is a former Marine "URAH!" I eat fast food sometimes, love gocarts and ATV's. I do have a college degree, but I don't look down on others because I am thankful. I just want everyone else to remember that there are many others in this country with the last name of "Fowler" who don't have anything to do with the one in San Fran. We don't want to stigmatize the other Fowlers in this country. So lets be careful with these new terms. GOD BLESS AMERICA, and OUR TROOPS ALL OVER THE WORLD!!!!!!!

This is not about a crash of cultures or stereotyping people. We as Americans should not take the Longs as the typical American family. In fact, if that was the case then our country would have collapsed a long time ago. We would have succumbed to be a poor redneck country. We are the people making this a great a nation. Americans with a passion for culture, entrepreneurship, knowledge, innovations, sports. We are moving our country forward competing against Europeans, Asian countries. Not the Longs, they represent what is wrong with America. I don’t care about their eating habits, but I do care about their lack of vocabulary, no common sense and limited productivity. They have no appetite for knowledge and no thirst for progress. I believe in America. I believe we are better than that. We have our own culture, values, and unbounded vision. We are the greatest nation because we pushed forward the barriers of ignorance. Are we moving backwards now?. I am NOT proud of the media trying to portrait our nation being represented by the Longs and starting a witch hunt against the Fowlers. This is not about them, this is about what is the truth and what needs to be changed in America. I hope we are better than that.
