About Education
We like education. We spend a lot of money to send our kids to college. Some of us even go into debt to enable their kids to get a degree. But that's just for academic education. Some of the brightest in our nation have not even made it through grade school (Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Walt Disney) or through college (Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg, Harry Truman). Granted most of them are (were) very gifted but all of them had the strong urge not to waste time with the accumulation of book knowledge and rather acquire lesson's learned from life.
Here is an interesting list of millionaire dropouts that you should hide from your kids:

Some definitions about education:
- encompasses both the teaching and learning of knowledge, proper conduct, and technical competency. It thus focuses on the cultivation of skills, trades or professions, as well as mental, moral & aesthetic development.
- process or art of imparting knowledge, skill and judgment
- facts, skills and ideas that have been learned, either formally or informally
- teaching or refinement to be discriminative in taste or judgment
In any case, what we don't ever want to hear our children say is this: Look mom, I am a certified life coach and a certified destination coach!

I find it fascinating how ABC and it's long reach has managed to completely block any media regarding that episode of Wife Swap. I posted the episode in pieces on Youtube, they had me blocked within HOURS. They are really on this this thing full time. I have recorded all television media that would ordinarily cover such antics, NOTHING. Even The Soup! on E, was restrained, just showed clips of the husband from the midwest. When the Fowlers posted their apology, after the huge internet outcry, they then removed it for 'reasons they could not state'. Probably exploring a lawsuit.
What most people don't realize is this was an almost unprecedented event for so many reasons. The fact that there were phone calls to the Fowler residence within minutes of airing on the East Coast. The fact that Stephen Fowlers business associates were published, and demands made for his firing/resignation. That even Google Earth had some kind of marker first, on his residence, and later his address was blocked on there. The Fowlers had to hire 24/7 security, I don't know for how many days. People wanted to turn them into CPS for emotional child abuse. That neighbors wrote in to blogs begging not to take things physical, that they did not ascribe to Stephen Fowlers snobbery, and they did not want someone in their Noe Valley neighborhood committing acts of violence, especially by mistake. That literally THOUSANDS of people signed onto the ABC web message boards that night, to comment. ABC had someone on that board full time deleting comments right and left...everything from posted personal information on the Fowlers, to comments that were not really TOS violations, just heartfelt disgust. That on Friday, January 29, (keep in mind this episode aired East Coast at 8pm), Stephen Fowler became #50 of the most searched on Google. That was a Super Bowl Weekend to boot, lots of other things to look up on the net. That at least one of his business associations, Pacific Environment, took the time to send out emails to most of the people who wrote to them via email. Blogs that were personal to a few hundred, became comment forums for thousands. There was a song posted on YouTube, Stehpen Fowler is a douchebag. A few of his 'friends' tried to defend them, but there wasn't much they could say. A few also tried to capitalize on the Misery that is the Fowlers as well. I find it fascinating there was such a huge backlash, yet somehow in a week when we hear over and over the rant of some two bit movie star we don't hear anyone commenting on the attitudes and the country's reaction to the truly egregious behavior of one Stephen FOULer.

I'm surprised so many people have missed this aspect of the awful Stephen Fowler Wife Swap episode: Mr. Fowler is mentally ill. It's so obvious.
Fowler apologists proclaim the Wife Swap editors didn't broadcast the many times Fowler apologized to Guest Wife Mrs. Long during her SF visit and that editing resulting in a skewed and unfavorable representation of Fowler. But wait a minute, Fowler savagely insults Long, apologizes to Long then savagely insults Long again and again, supposedly apologizing again and again. Fowler's repetition of his abusive behavior and subsequent apologies tells me that he's aware of his abuse and that he feels regretful for abusing, but he is UNABLE to control himself and he attacks again. Fowler's inability to control meting out abuse to others is clear evidence of mental illness. Fowler is clearly mentally ill! As much fun as it may be to slam Fowler for his awful behavior in front of a camera I feel it is unkind to make fun of him. He's sick and he is out of control. Fowler deserves compassion and appropriate medical and psychiatric treatment. His family obviously needs treatment and support for living with such a cruel and out of control abuser. My child and I have actually had a professional family therapy session after watching that Wife swap episode. Oh my gosh, it was traumatic for us to watch something like that on tv. I question the Wife Swap folks for airing that episode without a disclaimer. It was surprising to encounter that much out of control abuse in our evening television hours. My heart goes out to the people touched by Fowler's abuse. I hope Fowler's wife can get help or their family. It's sad to think of them too isolated to get support and needed medical care as a result of the outrage they have provoked from the Wife Swap episode.

No matter how many psychologists(who erroneously claim to be scientists)claim that behavior is disease, the notion is ridiculous. HE IS MORALLY CULPABLE FOR HIS BEHAVIOR!! Even if correlation is shown between his behavior and his biology, correlation does not show causation! Scientists understand this (psychologists and pop-psychology loving pseudo-intellects don't).

Moral Reasoning: Watching the Brain
Future research could focus on determining if immoral actions suggest some sort of “dysfunctional concept of self,” a lack of appropriate teaching models from early childhood, the inability to effectively judge a possible outcome of an action, or a combination of these scenarios. '
This man is incapable of distinguishing between moral and immoral behavior, don't employ or associate with him.

You are saying something different than the previous person, and I think it's a bit of a straw man to what I said. The previous person (along with quacks all over the nation) ontologically redefine behavior as a matter of health/disease, and conclude that people are not morally culpable for their behavior. Finding cause, or making up causes for behavior does not address morality!

I just read the cached note on Renee's Personal Life Media blog. She says she has removed the apology statements from both she and Stephen for reasons she can't divulge. That only means ONE thing people - the Fowlers must be suing ABC.

Both parties are the extreme in my view. Fowler & wife were self righteous snobs. At the same time the midwest family seemed uneducated & uninterested in their children's health/weight issues. Come on the mother couldn't even read the directions when she entered the home. How embarassing is that for the Mayor's wife. LoL

Was it just me or did anyone else notice that on the show this guy used his GRE score as his IQ equivalent? The GRE is NOT an IQ test. My husband and I picked up on that and laughed. If his GRE score was high then cudos to him. However, many people with and average IQ can do very well on the GRE if they study for it.

Wow. That's all I can say. How does someone even begin to think about changing the world when they can't even have an open mind of another person's way of life for a short period of time? It truly is inexplicable. He claims to have the superior stance on everything and yet in less than one hour he managed to outrage a multitude of people. His wife same elitist views make it hard for one to find any compassion or saving grace of these people. Their kids look miserable and exhausted. They'll probably end up on smack or some other drug just to rebel against their parents. It is sad. As for British people as a whole, there not as bad as this guy. Saying they all are is stooping to this black abyssed soul of a man's level. Violence will do nothing but let him console himself that he was right. So let Mr. Fowler sit his over-inflated ego, with the knowledge that his ideas not only contradict themselves, but that the country that help him become wealthy and educate his kids hates his ways.

My humble thoughts after the show were that he was only partially educated (all books, no experience). He seemed like he came from wealth (I could be wrong, just seemed like he didn't understand real execution from theoretical learning).
Finally, one of the words he used to describe the paint-ball experience was "fascistic". I am not sure he knows what that means. I can see his other word "militaristic" remotely applying to a paint-ball experience, but fascistic is the adjective of fascism defined as "A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism".
The bottom line is that he does need help, as his wife states. I hope he can obtain that help, for the sake of his children.
p.s. I was born in Missouri. Not all of us are entirely uneducated...

Are you insane on the education spill. Over 90% of the individuals listed came from families with money and the oil tycoons stole most of their wealth by sleazy land deals which continues today. Even Gates's father is an elite attorney out of Seattle. What are you teaching- to keep kids dumb and broke? I could care less as to who Stephen Fowler is, thought the site was humorous but apparently you are uneducated and only specialized in computers, though web sites are a cinch to do. Wake up dipshit!

"...but all of them had the strong urge not to waste time with the accumulation of book knowledge and rather acquire lesson's learned from life."
Nope. They researched their respective fields avidly on their own. If that knowledge was to be found in books, and generally some or most of it is, they pursued it there.
Trial and error is a phenomenal learning tool, but the basis for the "trial" had to come from somewhere. And, of course, the whole idea of education, is to attempt to reap the benefits of humanity's cumulative knowledge. The benefit being that you need to experiment less, since you already learned the results, which normally speeds up the process of getting to where an individual wants to be.
You seem to have a disregard for education. That's funny.

All I have to say is how amazing it is to me that the people who profess their intelligence as much as Mr. Fowler, also display such ignorance towards all of humanity. If he was so worried about where this country of OURS is going, then perhaps he should display some interest in all of mankind instead of people the people who suit his specific needs. Being from the Midwest myself and moving all over this great nation of ours, as well as traveling to England, I have to say you will never meet a more genuine group of people than those from the Midwest.
As for his wife, I would hope she watched the show and felt the feigned intelligence of her husband. If he knew anything about "Podunk" towns, he would know that those are the towns that encompass such behaviors as helping your fellow man when he needs a hand in life, waving to anyone who passes by on the street, and believe in strong family values.
I am not a religious or flag flying individual, and I am not always proud of this country. However, I am proud of our soldiers and, especially after watching that atrocious display by Mr. Fowler, I am proud to be an American (especially an educated American from the MIDWEST).

good for you! I'm from a "podunk" town in the northeast in a highly educated area with a liberal arts college in town.
In our towns the average income is about $45k yet even though most of us are struggling we still find room in our hearts to donate time and money to those in need. We still have the ability to respect each other and still stand for our rights.

One of my favorite sayings is "Nobody knows LESS than the person who KNOWS IT ALL". Why? Simple. Arrogant, pompous douche bags like this guy cannot and will not reach a higher level of consciousness because they refuse to open their minds and hearts to new thoughts, new experiences, new world views in a world that is constantly in a state of flux and will never stay static! I learn more from listening to my 3 yr old son than I do reading the headlines. His innocence, love, and wonder inspire me to be the best I can be. I learn more from listening than I do from talking and sharing my knowledge. I get better results from my kids when I lead by example rather than when I lead with dictates and ultimatums. Bottom line, to be humble, gracious, loving, long suffering, and tolerant are benchmarks of a higher evolved being, not a college education. BTW, I make over $300K a year and I dropped out of college after 1 year to start my first business. Go figure.

Get over it please. I do not know the Fowlers and I do not agree with the treatment. But, I can also see that there is no use dragging it along. There are more important things in this world. I would say that this has become such an issue with the public because it is in a way representative of normal america versus the wealthy and in our current economy rich people hate is a big topic. I have seen the tapes that are not edited and a lot was cut out for broadcast that made Mr. Fowlers behavior much less brisk and underlines Longs own prejudices and haughty attitude.
Both parties are in the wrong. But what they are wrong for is going on that television show.
Reply to this
You know, what really bothers me is that Fowler was trying to analyze Long as if he was some kind of social anthropologist and he could dehumanize her. But what he really did was dehumanize himself.
The Fowlers' prejudices are much more insidious because he feels superior, has hate for certain people and the power, means and sense of entitlement to enforce their views.
The whole point of America is that people get to make their own choices whether you think they are for the best or not.
He thinks he knows the 'right way' to live and can force it upon people.

The one thing I dislike in all this backlash is that people condemn Fowler but show some of the same prejudices.
For instance, they'll say things like Fowler has no right to judge because can find ignorant obese people in England too. And with that you still have a focus on associating ignorance and obesity!
Also people who feel the need to denounce him and announce that they are not obese and that they are educated as well.
The association with high class and high ethics/manners is troubling too. I know that the term 'class' being used alternately for being well mannered or being materially wealthy but people are using the class concept in a negative way as well.
People get it straight. Your education level, weight, and wealth are separate from how worthy of a person you are.

I think Fowler should be placed in basic training with the military and see what attitude he has then. I think he needs an an old fashioned whoop ass to bring him down to human being level. He isn't any better because he make more money. He obviously isn't intelligent in his actions and verbalization skills. He's a disgrace to human kind and husband material. His wife enable him with the ignoring his ignorance and behavior. They need to be humbled.

What I find interesting about the list of millionaire dropouts is that it emphasizes TYPICALLY non-degreed professionals like actors, writers, musicians and other creatives while also celebrating a number of people who became successful long before the college degree evolved into a firewall in the corporate hiring process. I'd be curious to see the number of college graduate millionaires in a comparative list, as championing the exceptions (over a century ago in some cases, I may add) who succeeded proves little. Bottom line: knowledge and ability are king, whether self-taught or acquired through education, but you're more likely to succeed with a degree because of the way the business world is set up and the strength of your alumni connections. Of course, in a society that craves fame, fortune and notoriety over all, a list like this should launch at least another thousand ships, 999 of which will likely run aground.

For the record, college degree debate aside, I'm no fan of boorish types who find a high IQ to be a license to berate others. I wonder, however, how many of Mr. Fowler and his wife's actions were performed at the request of producers and recut for emphasis on the negative.

Interesting that people like Stephen consider themselves educated. They lack refinement and good conduct which should be available from any good education. Also, being mean spirited and cruel is the mark of the underdeveloped mind and spirit. We don't have Nobel Prize winners like this for a reason.

I am very glad you took the initiative to publish this website. It points to a reality that as Americans, when we are constantly pressed to tolerate all, we tolerate what is clearly intolerable. And the "noble ideals" that are used to promote the causes of tolerance, is rarely practiced among those who preach it the loudest.
I for one did not see the episode, as I have become extremely discouraged by the behavior modification hammered out by the media, but what I have seen is the outrage among the public, something that has encouraged me. As our traditional values continue to decline, I can only hope that public outrage will increase and that ultimately the truth be exposed on the likes of those who use contemporary-politically correct language, like Stehpen Fowler, to support their own childlike behavior.

Fowler's ideas about education are laughably superficial. Education for him as little to do with the cultivation of the mind and heart-- it's simply a status marker, like driving a BMW or having a Louis Vuitton purse. You can tell by the way he's "educating" his children. It's not so much an education as a resume-building bootcamp he's providing to them, all with the end of getting them into one of those brand name Ivy league schools which again, are markers of the upper-class social status he covets. He makes the kid fence, not because the kid likes to fence, or because he is concerned about his physical fitness, but more likely because fencing is an aristocratic sport and a marker of being high status. Perhaps little Stephen wanted fencing lessons as a child because all the kids who went to the posh schools took fencing lessons. Now he's making his son do it. Same with the piano lessons-- Fowler isn't so much interested in cultivating musical appreciation in his kid as he is in forcing him to do it in order to build a list of "extracurricular" activities for his all important ivy league college application. Once again, his motivation is very superficial-- "educated" people play the piano, so the boy needs to acquire this status marker of being educated. I can see the same rationale behind the whole French-American school business (upper-class people speak French, ergo my son must speak French). He apparently has a vision in his head of a cultivated man being like Niles Crane (hehe Frasier's brother) playing classical piano, speaking French, fencing, going to Harvard, sipping fancy wine, etc. This attitude has about as much to do with education (if we mean cultivating and exercising the mind, body, and spirit) as what one of those pageant moms does when she slaps make up and hairspray on her little angel and enters her into a kiddie beauty contest for the sake of getting a sash, crown, fabulous prizes, and bragging rights. For Mr. Fowler again, intelligence and education all boil down to social status and bragging rights. You can see this in the way he talks about the GRE-- it's important that he emphasize that it places him in the "99.9 percentile"-- not what intellectual aptitude it predicts. I suspect that the possesion of these his ivy-bound super prodigy kiddies are really nothing more than products of his own resume building. After all, genius superchildren are de rigeur among his "set" just like the cleaning lady. Fowler, if you are reading this, I think your ideas of what it means to be educated and intelligent are PATHETIC, SHALLOW, and BLOODY stupid. You are so transparent.

I think it is terribly sad that the woman from Missouri struggled to read on the show. I did not see the whole show and only know this from reading random blogs. I also learned through reading blogs that Mr. Fowler said he came to America to help make it a better place. Well, Mr. Fowler, here was a golden opportunity. Instead of ridiculing your 'new spouse' for not reading well you should have sat down and taken some time to help her improve her reading skills. You're a jerk. By the way, I am from Iowa, both my dad and brother served as Marines in Viet Nam and Iraq respectively.
