What's an international school?
When I heard Renee saying that her kids attend an international school it reminded me of a bygone era when cities like Tokyo, Paris or Buenos Aires had expat communities (diplomats etc) who did not want their children to attend the local schools.
What struck me more is that Renee said "bi-lingual international school". At that particular school they teach in english and french. You might want to argue the usefulness of learning french but it is nice to learn a second language.
If you have been to San Francisco you might also know that this is a very diverse city. Not only do you have a large asian community and a large hispanic community, but you also have groups of people from every known country in this world. That is nice!
Don't feel bad if you are a parent (lower or middle class, not upper class like Stephen) and you have to send your children to a public school. I know that San Francisco's public schools are much more diverse than the international school, despite the name. Go to any public school in San Francisco and you will hear many languages spoken. In fact, I bet you, if you your kids want to, they can pick up cantonese/mandarin or spanish in no time. Not just french. And that's a lot more useful.
In conclusion, most public schools in San Francisco are tri-lingual at the least. No need to spend money on a private bi-lingual school.

I think this guy Stephen Fowler is just a racist as I have head a lot of people of his nature from that country where he comes from are racists and very impolite. I didn’t watch the show but if his talking about class and sending his kids to a $40 000 on a bilingual school, well good for him, people who have real money spend that on changing the world in a better place every day. If he has got class, then should the rest of us suffer just because we have fewer resources as compared to him, or maybe should we all send out kids to a “bilingual international” just to keep up with his standards of been modest? Maybe we should blame ourselves for not living in an uptown house just because this guy thinks his the definition of a good life. This guy sucks and I am sure the heavens agree with me. It is clear this guy has some psychological problems and needs help, people with enough money will not criticise but will share their riches for the betterness of the society they are living in. My question is, “how does he want to save the environment if he can not save first, the people that are living around him?” On the other hand, what will be better to have helped someone achieve a better life like yours or to have saved the environment and destroy the people living in it? I now wander how he would treat a black person with this kind of hatred within him; this guy is simply a loser, a racist and worse more ignorant that’s why he would act like that. I now wander what kind of kids he has and if at all they are not the same like him. Shame to Stephen Fowler and his family, the consequences of his actions will catch up with him soon or later and if his wife is still with him probably she’s living a horrible unhappy life.

I may not be Midwestern, but I am Texan, so does that make me a hick or redneck? Whatever. Oh wait, I'm also a military wife who is a little overweight. Should I blame my beautiful children for my chunky-ness? By the by Mr. Fowler, my husband, who fights for your freedom to be a total douchebag; has been to college for Electrical Engineering. My husband had many many options for his life, he chose to serve this great country and the citizens in it. Oh, and I hold a Masters degree in Psychology, working towards my doctorate, I suppose you could say that your wife and I are life coaches. However, I don't harbor snide or snarky opinions of my clients that could be aired out with the dirty laundry and ruin me in an instant. On to your poor defenseless children in this matter, I don't know what kind of upbringing you had in your childhood, but I suspect your parents didn't love you much either. You write that no one cares but you seem very offended by what he had to say and perhaps he is not making up for his thoughts of self-inadequacy maybe he knew that his words would make so many care, placing him in the spotlight. Which would mean all the negative attention hes receiving from everyone "floats his boat", he could be reading your post laughing to himself at your anger and distaste for him. Just took a good look at Personal Life Media website. First of all, can't prove it, but I think Renee Fowler changed her last name but is still on the site. Second, just reading through the utter tripe on that site made me ill. Nothing more than self promotional, superficial garbage. No wonder that it took Ms. Fowler 2 attempts to apologise, both equally lame. She's as two dimensional and vacuous as the site she promotes herself on.

In a modern world of live tv (reality) shows, the shock-affect work well. Although Mr. Fowler had no idea what would shape up to be what it (our responses)would become. I know this behavior needed consequences. However, if you read these responses, we sound just like him.... I live in a glass house and choose to hold my stone. Faith has it, he will have to justify to "my Father Who is in Heaven" and ask to be "forgiven his trustpasses" as we should ask for our's. Although the shallow behavior is just that, shallow, he is human with all of his non-perfect flaws. Let up pray that he has learned from his err and want to share his wealth (knowledge) with those who are least of his brothers and sisters. Maybe he will know that compassion was given to him, as was his wealth (knowledge) by the same Father that gave us our's. Think Before We Speak!

I was wondering about poor Renee who absolves herself of almost all responsibility for her family fiasco.
The woman who claimed that she didn't want to spend too much time with her children because she would get "grumpy" is no saint and is certainly not an active participant in her children’s lives (unless it doesn't conflict with her desire to save the planet from McDonald's.

I have been a big fan of Renee's ever since I found her PodCast over a year ago. She's helped me and many others, and I believe her to be genuinely compassionate and kind. I was shocked to see the show. From the first opening descriptions of the families, the editors made the Fowler's sound arrogant, pompous & elitist. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt & assumed creative editing was responsible for the sour impression. And to a large extent, I do believe this to be true.
However ... I winced as I watched the show; it was truly painful. How could Renee be married to a man who gloated, took joy and found humor in being intentionally cruel and demeaning to anyone? In front of their young & impressionable children, no less?
I know Renee had set her intention for only good to come from her experience on Wife Swap. Ask & you will receive. Like her, I do believe this. I also believe that we are presented lessons in life & it is our job to learn from them. I believe we are presented the same lesson, over & over, perhaps in many forms, until we DO learn from it -- painful as that is.
Renee, I'm sure you are considering the lessons from this experience. I would gently suggest you look again at your response at the very end of the show ... when they return to the families and ask about any changes that have been made. You were sitting next to Stephen, and as I recall you both somewhat chuckled, and you said, "I can't even remember any of Gayla's rules ... no, we haven't changed anything." The quote is not direct ... your words may have been a little different. Was there really nothing for you to learn from Gayla? If not, I am very sad for you.
Did you notice your children's smiles and how happy they were when they went to the race track and went paintballing with Gayla? Did you hear your daughter's comment about Gayla not being very well educated?
Perhaps you were very confident in that you knew you had valuable lessons to bring to the Longs. You did indeed have wonderful lessons to offer ... as did they. Perhaps your over-confidence is, in fact, closer to pride & even arrogance. The Longs evaluated the experience and made positive changes ... you did not.
I am sorry for the pain you must be feeling. I wish for you to learn from this, as I am sure you will. I support you in your journey & wish you success, peace and happiness.

Don't forget the face Renee shows her customers is the facade that brings in more of their all-important wealth. Everyone should take a lesson here that many times the most successful people get to that point because they do whatever it takes to make it happen. Dignity, honesty, compassion - these are inhibitors when it comes to making a buck. What's more stinging is that Renee at least knows how those values should be observed in her trade but chooses not to uphold them herself or at home. Let's be real about how money changes people.

Are there other types of schools you dislike or do you just dislike anything associated with Mr. Fowler? The choice of where to send your children to school is a personal one and I think you are straying from the point by attacking his choice of school...

I think you confuse a bi-lingual educations where the children are taught in more than one language with schools that have children that speak many different languages. There are numerous studies that show the benefits of a bi-lingual education. Having your peers speak many different languages is wonderful environment to grow up in. Having to learn in one of those languages is a much different thing.

I totally agree.I have always said when I have children one day I will send them to a school like that. Yes Fowler is very rude and all the other things people say. But the school they attend is a different story. I grew up in a very diverse neighborhood and mixed school. People spoke many languages there, but that doesn't mean I'm just going to learn how to speak it.(These school are teaching these languages and educating with them.) I believe it expands there mind and keeps their brains active and learning. I'm not mad that their children are getting a better education then I had. I only make about 30,000 dollars a year and someone who makes more then I do who can send their kids to a school like that, has every right to.

I went to several different public schools that were multi-lingual and i know that nowadays you must have at 2-3 years of foreign language to graduate. The only problem at of my whole graduating class only 6% could actually converse in another language. I had attended an private International school for the first year of high school and the difference was outstanding. I had learned Japanese and Arabic in one year.The three years I spent at public school learning Spanish was horrible. I speak Spanish at home and even my family was appauld with the program they were teaching. The point is you pay for a quality education in this country. Although the public school system isn't terrible and they offer allot , kids nowadays don't care and parents don't put enough interest in their child's study. Now if your paying over 20,000.00 a year for education, you would make sure that your child is leaning something. I'm not a fan of Fowler at all, but you cant talk down on the education his children have. I ended up going to a tri-lingual collage in Mexico , and at 26 year's old I am now fluents in 7 different languages with a MBA and a EdS. degree.

I totally agree with you: there's a big difference between hearing a language being spoken around you and being able to learn and benefit from it. Foreign language is a subject very close to my heart, and I think it's disgraceful how neglected foreign language is in the public school system. I studied French for four years in high school, and fortunately I had a fantastic teacher who actually taught us through music and news clips from France. We actually learned enough to converse with each other and have a fluid string of dialogue going on. That was such a big deal in my county that they had her on the news for her unique teaching methods... Our class scored above the majority of other French classes just because we were able to speak the language. The Spanish and German classes were able to speak some broken phrases, but I was surprised to see how little other people retained even in the higher levels of language courses... I think it's a shame that other people are deprived the privilege of learning a foreign language thoroughly...

And second of all, Arabic is a language, not a type of country. I think that what you meant to say was Arab. (Again, uneducated.)
If you want your argument against Fowler's ignorance to be taken seriously, you might want to consider removing this particular statement since it greatly detracts from the point that you are trying to make.

I agree that this statement detracts from the very fact that Mr Fowler is a complete ass. However truth is France is heading towards a Muslim majority in the next 50 years. Bad or Good? I really don't care however just pointing out that this statement is not entirely inaccurate.

After working for a French company for many years and traveling to France, the statement of France heading towards a Muslim majority is correct. The French of course used the immigrants for low level work and most upper class never wanted them to succeed.
The French are very class oriented. If you do not attend a few specific Universities in France, you do not move up the food chain in business. You cannot attend the Universities unless your parent(s) attended previously, or your family has money.
Talk about India being class oriented... the French take the cake.

Actually since you are trying to correct others: While the term Arabic is utilized when referring to the language of Arabs, in this particular context, Arabic may be used when referring to the culture and/or language of Arabic peoples. I would not presume that those reading this are not uneducated when I myself to not know the full terminology of a particular word.

Ok, yes this guy was beyond horrible, but it shouldn't reflect poorly on the school his children go to. I actually went to the very same school that his kids currently do, and not only did I get an astonishing amount of financial aid, this school was truly international as well as a great academic experience. I mean, I came into the high school portion barely able to speak Spanish, and left it almost entirely fluent in both French and Spanish.
Nonetheless, this man is a horrible, horrible representation of the community and he as a person deserves no defense.

French is not just spoken in France, just like Spanish is not just spoken in Spain. French is commonly spoken all over the African continent, on many Caribbean Islands, in parts of Canada, and many other parts of our world.

I just wanted to respond to the French school comment. I happen to go to one of those "bi-lingual international schools" in New York. The fact is that the french education system demolishes the American education system. The Clintons said it themselves when they visited France. Every student attends school from 8 to 5, and we work our asses off, while most of my American friends in the same grade do nothing everyday (he takes 2 hours of shop, a couple of hours of band and beginners spanish). Think the SATs are fun? Try taking a Baccalaureate. The french system teaches you critical thinking, not relying on multiple choice questions. What's the benefit of going to one of these "bi-lingual international schools"? Let's just say Colleges liked the extra effort we've been making. (Please dont take this as an attack on the American system, I'm just giving some facts based on my own experiences)

Fowler mentions something about GRE scores. He is almost certainly lying.
In the first place, if you've taken the GRE, you know that you do not get percentage with decimal precision. You can score in the 99th percentile, but you cannot score in the 99.99 percentile. Also, you do not get one "GRE score"--you get several; scoring in the 99th percentile on one portion of the test isn't all that impressive, particularly considering the 99th percentile on the writing portion encompasses almost 13 percent of total test-takers.
Second, the notion that GRE scores correlate in any meaningful with IQ scores is absurd, and to suggest that you can get a *specific* IQ score based on your GRE percentile is to suggest that you're probably lying about your test-scoring credentials to begin with.
Anyone familiar with British culture can spot this guy from a mile away: he is a British "venture capitalist," meaning he *inherited* most if not all of his money, and is happily maintaining a fortune stateside through the sorts of revenue sources elites can generate with little to no education (see Hilton, Paris).
Fowler's "critiques" of American culture weren't even original. He is, apparently, equal amounts hack and prick.

You're absolutely correct. I do believe that Mensa will allow you to join if you score over a certain level on (one or more) of the GRE tests, the LSAT, the SAT and the MCAT but I'm not 100% sure. However, all that translates to is that they believe that make the minimum IQ level to qualify for Mensa (which is around 130 I believe). You cannot take any of those numbers and map them to a Stanford Binet IQ value since it's not the same type of test.

I could not believe my eyes. My husband and I were sitting down watching the show as usual and what I saw was absolute ignorance. First of all, if he and his wife did not want to be in the U.S., simply go back home, but do not insult the Americans and their ways of life. He was the most arrogant, absurd, most rude, person I have ever seen, heard of or known of. He really thinks he is smart, but I must say, if he were so smart he would not have embarrassed himself like that. He has insulted race, religions, the educated, and those of all walks of life. I agree with you! If you are going invest effort, time, and money so your child can learn a second language, why not send them to Spanish or Mandarin class? These two languages are extremely useful. Mandarin will be a language students will need to learn for future business/professional careers, since China is moving up in the world and playing a huge-huge role in business, finance, and education.

I would just like to say I am in total agreement with the gentlemen who advised him to pack his shit and leave the Country he soo dislikes. I am disgusted at the fact that not only I, but now my daughter enlisted in the military to defend such pri#k# as him. I went to private international schools during my whole K-12 education. I did learn english and french pretty well and it did help me to get into one of the best colleges here in Mexico. However, my parents never forced me into silly afterschool activities or into doing things I didn't care about. I wouldn't go as far as saying that Renée is doing everything wrong. She chooses what to do with her childrens' school lives. But if I was her, I wouldn't be so surprised about my children ending up completely frustrated because they are not doing what THEY want.
I might not totally agree with the Long Family lifestyle. Still, I think it is completely rude and unnecessary bullying what Mr. Fowler did. Yes, Wife Swap is all about culture clashes, but in the end maybe you can learn something positive about the whole experience. In this case, I didn't see anything positive AT ALL. Mr. Fowler should definitely get help and learn that judging people that way will take him nowhere. Snobbish bastards like him are the ones who help build the stereotype regarding snobbish europeans. Hell, even snobbish europeans I've met are absolutely nice and easy-going. I was in a French Lycée for 4 years and I know how snobbish can people get.

The fact that you know and or grow up surrounded by people who speak a different language doesn't mean that you will learn it. You can pick up words and expressions, but learning a language takes more than simply sitting next to someone who speaks something else besides English. You not only need to learn how to speak it correctly, but also learn grammar, read it and be fluent. Education has a high price, but it is extremely rewarding. I'm not a fan of wife swap... but this Fowler guy sounds like a prick. But... person who wrote this article... not to be mean or anything... but French is the second most spoken language in the world. French isn't just spoken in France but about 2/3s of the countries in Africa, and some parts of the Middle East. And if you knew anyone who went to school in San Fran... you should also know that San Fran has a really bad public and magnet school system at this moment of time. Many parents in San Fran are sending their kids to much more expensive schools, so at least they can learn. I'm not defending this person... I don't know him... but... well not to side with the French either... but you should check your facts before stating something. I live in California. The percent of high school kids going to college from a public school... in LA... is like 20%. Where as a private of Bi-lingual international school is at the least 95% huge difference. I graduated from a private high school myself 2 years ago and have known some bi-lingual international kids. San Fran's schooling system is way worse and continues to worsen. In LA the percentage of public school kids achieving grade level or higher is 1.2%. That is down right miserable. There is nothing wrong with parents wanting their kids to go to good schools, but if the government won't supply adequate education... then well there are alternatives... if you have the money... sadly enough. BTW many parents and congressmen feel that the US educational system should transcend to the French school style, or something similar

I saw this show. Fowler is an embarrassment to the human race. I am educated and have traveled. I have lived in Europe. Bo person with any kind of class would treat another human being like he treated that guest in his home. Do I agree with the lifestyle of the other family? *Expat communities are not from some bygone era, they still do exist and are ever-growing. In fact I happen to live next to a huge American International School.
*French is a pretty useful language in many places where people don't speak a word of English (yes, they do exist all over the world, go check!)
*Even if France would become an Arab country (what a surreal silly remark), probably French will still be spoken over there as most North African Arabs who immigrate(d) to France speak French.
Have lots of fun watching your show. I hope I'll visit San Francisco and its diverse public schools some day. I hope you'll visit the rest of the world some day.

I agree that children will encounter many languages in regular San Francisco schools, but I have to defend bilingual schools. The idea is that children learn in both languages, not that they are exposed to both. Its a system of teaching that is not without usefullness. With that said $40,000 a year for tuition to any school is a rip off unless they pick you up every morning on a pink pony that flies.

Expats are not something from "a bygone era." I'm an expat living in Bangalore, India. I live in a community here of about 50% expatriate families and 50% Indian families (many of whom had left India for school or work, but have returned).
I didn't see this particular episode of "Wife Swap," but the husband in question sounds pretty heinous. I would just caution the readers to be careful about classifying all "international schools" as being tony, upper-crust ways of avoiding mixing with "the little people." My sons attend an international school, which has students from nearly 40 countries. They have the option to learn French - but they also have the option to learn Hindi, German, and Spanish.
Indian public schools are, like public schools in America, widely diverse as far as their offerings and the qualifications of their faculty. Since our boys are very young, we wanted to minimize as much as possible the impact on their day-to-day schooling, and make sure they are able to return to their US school as seamlessly as possible. An international school that adheres strictly to standards set by educators from many nations was the best option for our children.

I was born and raised in the US. But my parents came from Norther Ireland and I have lots of relatives still there. I can't tell you how jealous and hateful the people in Europe are towards the US. They take an elitist attitude and think we are all country bumpkins. For someone like Stephen Fowler he is a bacteria that is permeating this country. My suggestion to him is to GET OUT and find another place to live if you think you are so better that us. The US is really a very tollerant country, far more than the Brits and French. They think their MMMMM doesn't stink!

So I watch reality shows. At least the interesting ones. Wife swap is interesting in a weird sort of way.
Im also used to egocentric buttheads. I mean without them the shows cease to be interesting.

I think this man is a prime example of mentality of middle/upper class Americans today. It is sad and makes a statement about the type of messages his age group grew up with in this country. Money, power, be better than everyone else so competitively, and yet put on a good show for church on Sunday and participate in charities and other volunteer organizations to keep that false image. It is a shame the producers of the program did not intervene sooner saving some of the pain and suffering the swap wife had to endure! And as for his real wife? Well, she is married to the guy and it would seem must appreciate him for who and what he is to remain with him. Birds of a feather do flock together...however, must have been a nice break for her to be in the situation of having some power of her own for a change.
Let us hope this show and especially this episode opened the eyes of society regarding what we are and continue to become. Especially as examples to our children!

Actually, I went to an international school. You are wrong in saying that an expat community reminds you of "Tokyo, Paris, Buenos Aires"... but that's not true. Expat communities exist everywhere, in all decent sized cities! And international schools exist everywhere. Not only "rich and spoilt" kids go to international schools, that's a downright stereotype. In Europe, a lot of foreign companies pay for their employee's children to go to an international school, you don't have to be rich. My international school had around 60 different nations represented, how's that for "more diverse community in public schools than an international school" - sorry, that's just really stretching it. And in international schools kids usually don't just learn one or two languages, you can learn as many as you want, depending on the school's policies. Public school education provides that too, but does not provide FULL learning of one language, that's just impossible. So, overall, it seems that you are angry at the fact that some people have an opportunity to study in a different language, for the purpose of being fluent in it. This anger to me seems slightly ridiculous, and has nothing to do with the family on a pathetic TV show.

Fowler reminds me of the little geeky kid that everyone (including the girls) beat up at lunch time. He went home crying to Mommy every day with his underwear pulled up in a super wedgie. So he directs all of his formidable mental faculties and aces the GRE and goes onto become the most repugnant human being I've ever seen or heard. I kept hoping for his sake it was at least partly an act, kind of like how Simon used to be on American Idol but I fear that it was all him. All for real. Wow what an incredible asshole. Renee seemed like a fairly nice woman, how could she stand him? And what's with the bumper sticker slogan T-shirts? Hey, just wanted to let you know that French is the second most used language in international business, second to English. So while Spanish may be more useful in a few parts of this country (probably not the Cajan community of Louisiana, or the North East that has major contact with French Canada however) French would be very useful in business.

I agree! Fat people in this country are not fat because they are poor. If you were truly poor you would be skinny for God's sake! All you need NOT to be fat is eat less, buy tennis shoes ($60-$100) and run around your house if your neighborhood is not so safe. Jump rope in your backyard.. List goes on. Also the reason you are uneducated is again not money. All of you have access to PUBLIC library! Use it! Read some books to your children! This nation voted for Reagan and Bush, voted for the funding of the Iraq war, consistently elects morons and has squandered it's position in the firmament of the united nations. The values and patriotism you and Foul Fowler despise are the same values that made us a free and wealthy country. Reagan saved the US economy and helped the lower class citizens become the middle class.
The elite are the ones that want the lower class to remain the lower class, because if everyone could become upper class, elitists wouldn't be elitists. Nearly all those elitists claim to be liberals, because making handouts to the lower class keeps them in the lower class. If you give a man a fish, he eats for a day, if you teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.
They pretend to care about everyone in the lower class having an education, but not at the Ivy League schools. Only the rich can attend them. Then they make federal college aid, which only benefits the lower class, to attend the public colleges, not the middle class, which doesn't take into account that maybe more than one child in your family would like to be educated. For everyone else, the college tuition increases, so that eventually only the elitists can attend anyway.
They pretend not to believe in Terrorism, because then people won't join the military, leaving the US no choice but to join the United Nations, who will stifle free America by insisting we follow the same airheads that sent everyone running for independence in the first place.
You know what's wrong with National Health Care? Obviously not, since you mention the US Gov. is preventing it on purpose to bankrupt everyone.
If you go to a country that has National Health Care, be prepared to wait in lines for EVERYTHING. You have to qualify before you get treatment. If you aren't horribly sick, you get on a waiting list. Maybe if you're lucky, the 90,000 ahead of you won't live too long. Everything is in short supply and they rate your level of need against some unreasonable standard. Even the medical staff are in short supply, because if they get paid like any other low class stiff, why go through 6 years of overpriced medical school?

I completely agree with you. The arrogance of the liberals against President Bush is appalling. I went to an elite school and grew up around people like Stephen Fowler. I refuse to associate with any of these types in my adult life. It cost me business opportunities and country club memberships but I'm a much happier person and I treat people with respect. I also respect these supposed uneducated, fat and lazy Midwesterners and Southerners. They are the backbone of this country, the ones that do the work Stephen Fowler's weak body is obviously unequipped to handle. The Bush bashing is getting really old. Obama bashing is a lot more fun. While Stephen Fowler certainly sounds like a jackass, I do find it sadly ironic to read so many poorly punctuated responses defending the American educational system. How is it possible for anyone to get past the fourth grade and still not grasp the difference between a plural and a possessive? That's like not understanding the difference between "plus" and "minus" in math. Maybe some people should spend more time reading, and less time watching junk television.

How sad to think of the missed oportunities this experience could have provided to Stephen's children had he not wasted time trying to prove his superiority to himself. He chose instead to leave an everlasting example for his children of discrimination, prejudice and unkindness. Embracing the differences for a very short time and choosing the pros and cons of each situation life had provided for them would have been the way an educated, intelligent parent would have embraced this opportunity. Instead he felt defensive and threatened by the very person that he was the most critical of. Remind me again,"why he and his family applied for the show?" Did the producers forget to tell him that this situation was not permanent? Or did they apply so that they could show any american family, because they are all inferior to his, all the reasons why he felt that way? But besides that,"who encourages their children to be mean and ignore another as if they are unworthy?" He owes his children an apology for his embarassing behavior and he better hope that as they grow older they don't begin to see him as the sad, miserable bigot that he is. I spent 20 years living in San Francisco, involved in a host of business and community affairs at several levels.
What you heard from Mr. Fowler was simple the public verbalizing of what a very large majority (70%+) of San Franciscans think of themselves and of those who are not "smart" or "lucky" enough to be themselves.
The haughty, superior-minded, anti-American, anti-military hate-filled vitriol that Mr. Fowler filled the airwaves with is exactly how most San Franciscans speak when they think they are amongst their own. It is in their daily conversations.

I hope you will take this as a sincere and unequivocal apology. I have been completely taken aback by the response my behavior generated and it has taken a while for me to figure out what to say. I’m not doing this to try and redeem myself. Rather I’m trying to try and undo some of the hurt that people have obviously felt as a result of my comments.
Clearly I behaved like a complete jerk and I am deeply sorry for all the offense I have caused. I’m not going to hide behind excuses, I showed an extraordinary level of stupidity and arrogance. I will do my best to address most of the criticism directed at me. If I miss something out, however, it is not because I do not deem it important, it is just that there is rather a lot to cover.
First off, let me say I am deeply sorry for the terribly insulting way I treated Gayla during the show. She is a very pleasant person and clearly did not deserve to be treated that way. In fact, no one deserves to be treated that way. I was a bully, and it was just plain unacceptable. Once again, I offer my sincere apologies to Gayla, Alan, and their boys.
Some of my remarks obviously made me appear unpatriotic. Well that was just dumb. I chose to become a US citizen because I deeply respect the values upon which this great country is based. For the record, I think the US is an amazing country and I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather live. And while I do not happen to believe the Iraq war is a good idea, I do have a huge amount of respect for all the personnel who serve in the US military. They have the toughest job in the world and I am truly grateful for the sacrifices that they make to protect this country.
I used gross generalizations about Midwesterners and I am deeply sorry for any hurt I caused with these statements. My comments were just stupid and made me look like the one who is undereducated. Some of my best friends are Midwesterners, which shows how truly dumb my comments were.
I also deeply regret that my actions reflected badly on the environmental organizations with which I am affiliated, and were of disservice to the environmental movement as a whole. I’ve resigned both my nonprofit board positions and would ask you to not judge these organizations by my actions. I offer my sincere apologies to all the staff and board members.

Further, I regret that my remarks made me come across as a person who disrespects overweight people. I do not disrespect anyone for being overweight and I deeply regret that my remarks suggested I do. My wife has devoted her career to helping people and my comments reflect poorly on her and her heart-felt work. I apologize for my extreme insensitivity to her clients and her mission. Please don’t judge Renee by my actions.
I also want to apologize to my family and friends and thank them for their support, which I scarcely deserve. I believe we can all grow from experiences and I will work to ensure this experience teaches me to become a better, more compassionate person.

I'm an American of Irish descent, born and raised in the midwest. After seeing this poor fowl excuse of a human make a fool of himself, I now completely understand the IRA!
In spite of my midwestern location, I somehow managed to get a few college degrees. So did my parents. Amazingly, so did many of my friends and neighbors.
I have to admit I know many people who don't have these esteemed degrees and I like them just as well. Go figure.
According to Fowler logic, if I am to really pull myself out of my apparant lower status put on me because of my location, I surely must separate myself and apologize for having 'unfortunate' friends and neighbors who went to work immediately after high school. I thought they were nice people who could hold interesting conversations, and also have fun with. OOPS. Wrong values- right Mr. Fowler?
If I want to be valued at all, I must dismiss my firefighter son-in-law, and my blue collar friends and neighbors who work hard, own homes, READ, go to church, and are active in the community. They do all of these things because that is not just the midwestern way- it is the American way.
According to Fowler, I must be ashamed of "our ways" in order to be accpeted as a suitable human being. hmmm.
I am all for green everything, I volunteer and contribute to more than a few environmental orgs. I believe in healthy living, reading, and education. I love politics too.! Oh dear - Does this mean I'm a fish out of water and must move to the West Coast? phffft- right.
I also believe in respect,fun,and well rounded living. I enjoy music, reading, nature, and vegetarian meals. How did that happen in the midwest? It's a miracle!

I enjoy watching Wife Swap, however, Stephen's behavior was ugly, rude and mean. He had no right to hurt the lady in his home. If he didn't want to do the show, he should've said no. I think that you are misunderstanding what is meant by the "international" in what was described as an "bi-lingual international school." Sure the school sets out to acquire as many international students as possible, but the "international" is actually referring to the International Baccalaureate program that they offer at the school. And for the record, this school is not as exclusive as the Fowler's so readily made it sound, they make a big deal out of having students from all walks-of-life. In fact, roughly 75% of the students are on some sort of scholarship, and 100% are fully embarrassed by Stephen Fowler's remarks, I CAN ASSURE YOU... And how do I know this? I go there.

I do not think that this Mr. Fowler is real. He is too stereotypical and predictable (using his own words) to be true He is just playing the villain of the movie. That guy does not have any education, he speaks with his mouth full of food, he does not have any style in the way he dresses and his house decoration seems to be quite tasteless. Ok, I am a college educated person, who I guess you could say has made his fortune, seen the world and all it has to offer. i have about 17% body. This is an indication of what I have achieved in my 39 years. I don't say this to be boastful, in fact I never bring it up. If you met me you would never even think of me as this worldly person. To me it is no big deal. I don't need to rub anybodies face in it. I was in the right place at the right time in my life. God has been good to me in many facets. Thankfully, I am secure enough in who and what I am that I don't need to brag or be boastful. I am secure in my manhood, and I thank my parents for raising me right. I really feel sorry for this guy. Well neither a degree nor an income are worthy of admiration - it's a person's character that is their measure. Stephen Fowler showed himself, time and again to be an absolute piece of human garbage, and his wife seems well suited to rot together with him. I felt so sorry for Gayla - she was a good person who was actually trying to make some positive changes in his household for his children, and accurately identified some shortcomings in their lives, and made sensible moves to address them. All she got for her trouble from that nasty, buck-toothed British fairy was more abuse though.

I watched this show and it was painfully obvious this man lacks the etiquette/manners/IQ he so desperately believes he possesses.
ETIQUETTE is defined as: ... ceremonial code of polite society.
POLITE is defined as: showing good manners toward others, as in behavior, speech, etc.; courteous; civil: a polite reply.
In other words, etiquette is used as a way and means of making others feel comfortable around you. Instead, he used his perceived "higher education and perceived etiquette" to not only belittle and denigrate her, but also a good part of this great nation.
It goes without saying if he and his wife are appalled by the United States, they are free to leave any time! I'm sure there would be a line around the block with folks willing to help them pack.
I grew up in the mid-west, and I guarantee you, the good folks of the mid-west could teach this man a few good lessons about "treating others the way you'd like to be treated." Their good ole hometown hospitality is second to none.

I am currently enrolled in a public school where sure some kids speak spanish, cantonese/mandarin, or french. However only spanish, french, and latin are taught, and from personal experience I can tell you that the overwhelming majority take spanish. This does not by any means mean that the majority of the school speaks fluent spanish in fact you would be hard pressed to find even 50 students that could hold a conversation in spanish. Where as if you were to attend a "bi-lingual international school" then you would be taught core subjects (math, science, history, ect.) in a language separate then that of your native tongue. In turn presenting the student with a much greater chance of becoming fluent in a second language and creating a better understanding. making the reason for sending your child to a "bi-lingual international school" all the more reasonable. I believe that you are being prejudice towards these schools and the people that send their children to these schools just for the sake of venting towards this man. Also your correct theres no NEED to send your child to a "bi-lingual international school" and theres no NEED to send your child to a college like Harvard or Yale better to send them to a community college, hell why send them to college at all? Send them to work for McDonalds there they will cultivate great people skills, discover the culinary secrets behind the Big Mac, and learn math behind the cash register! Final thoughts the more money you spend on a service the better the quality and if you have the ability and financial stability to send your child to private school then why not?

Not to defend anyone on this episode, but French actually is a useful language, especially if you want to work in business. Despite the number of Spanish-speaking countries, most international business is conducted in English (obviously) or French. Of course, if you want to work domestically or in the health field, it's kind of a waste of time, but still...

With the shallow comment of saying that learning French is not very useful, one needs to step back and take a look at the rest of the world and understand that knowing French doesn't mean that it comes down to knowing a few words when traveling throught the airport. Knowing French opens one up to the rest of the planet out there, culture, people and hey-what do you know- international "knowledge", something that we as an American culture sorely lack. Spanish and Mandarin do as well, but with different effect. Enrolling one's children in French-American school is for those who DO NOT have a myopic reality associated with being "American". Comments like "No need to spend money on a private bi-lingual school" is fairly ignorant since one can spend MUCH more money on the plethora of other private schools in the City (Lowell, Urban, etc) for the explicit purpose of getting into Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, etc. The purpose of French-American school is obvious for ensuring that one's kids do not grow up with a typical narrow-minded (um, mid-western, obese and ignorant) reality that is all too pathetically common in our country. If you haven't stepped out of this country and know how stupid we look and sound from the outside, how would you know?

I went to the American International School of Vienna, Austria when my dad worked for the UN. Most American kids were the same kids you can see in any U.S. high school. A few times, the kids of the ambassador acted like snobs and they were straighthem out by telling them we're an economic class in the U.S. and not like social class in Europe. we emphasized work experiences in the U.S>, In the UK, it is mostly educational experiences. Most British kids went to Vienna International School. they were quit the snobs when we played against them, like we're stupid Americans who don't learn German or traveled within Europe. they were wrong, man.

I do hope that no-one who has seen this show and read these comments believes that this man is typically British! I am an Englishman by birth, now a naturalized US citizen, also resident in California (at the warmer end). I love both my native and my adoptive country, finding much to admire and some things to deprecate in both. Having been educated in a public school system, I think it would be fair to say that NO student is going to learn another language asides from that which he is taught in the classroom just because his friends speak it. They may learn some spanglish, but I'm being sincere, you're obviously more likely to learn a language you are taught than just out of whim decide to pick it up from your friends. I do think it's more likely that you're going to learn a language if you courses force you too rather than leaving it up to an individual students choice. It's just unlikely, we're just kids...I've NEVER heard of anyone in my school having learned Mandarin from their friends. That's a language that takes dedication and study not just auditory skills.

SF public schools may be diverse, but that is strictly Tower of Babel diversity--very few ever associate with each other. The school that this guy's kids go to is one of the best in California regardless of his idiocy. I've known many fine children to go through there. As for the public schools, there is only one decent public high school in the City--Lowell and it's as exclusive as any private school. Having people talking around you in Cantonese isn't tantamount to diversity. I went to school in SF with a Cantonese majority, and very few would even share a conversation with any "white devil"--this is what my few Cantonese friends informed me they referred to caucasin students as in their native tongue.

I think it is kind of funny to think that they have an international private school in SF. When I think of SF, I think of a city that has a dirty downtown area, where Castro is the safest part, and it is 45 min north from where I live. This is great! I moved to SF from the Midwest a few years ago for my job and have hated this place since to the get go. I have been saying the largest general population of jerks have all relocated to the Bay Area, with the capitol of jerkville being San Francisco. Thank you Mr. Fowler for providing proof to the world. There are a couple more hundred thousand like him all over SF and the Bay Area.

A big advantage of learning French is the opportunity to game French women. Contrary to American stereotyping, French women do shave (everywhere). They're also far more feminine than their American counterparts. It's unfortunate that the 60s women's rights movement went too far here in the US. It turned American women into p@nis-less men.

I love this website - it is helping me to regain some confidence in the people of the United States.
My hope is that more people will wake up and realize that Stephen Fowler's attitude pretty much typifies the east and west coast, democratic, establishment attitude.
My question is this - if the east and west coasters are SOOOOO very learned and advanced over us midwestern hicks, please tell me why your states are the ones who are leading the country in all of the dire economic indicators right now - i.e. record decreases in home values, record foreclosures and record job losses while most midwestern states are far more stable.
New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, California, etc. - great places for sub-prime mortgages on overpriced homes! Yep, you guys are the smart ones, no question about it!!!

First off, apologies on future spelling error since i really do not care about that at the moment though i will fix some if i notice them.
In California it is actually quite common to see people who are bi-lingual heck I am tri-lingual and know some rudiments of other languages as well. It is natural for us (and other states too I am sure) to be at least bi-lingual no matter what and I know many public schools do teach french in fact i think the more common languages that school teaches are French, Spanish, and German (and Asian languages like Chinese (mandarin or kanto) Japanese, Korean... you name it we even have Latin here. no matter what each language IS useful in present times as we begin to establish more communications with other nations. You just need to find use for the language in the job you do.
just wanted to support some of the posts here showing that other regions are multi-lingual as well (does not matter whether it is private or public)

Just another observation. The Brits, along with many European countries, were bombed heavily. By Americans and Nazis. This is something that America has never gone through. The Europeans realized that they had to take care of each other and keep each other safe. Hence socialized medicine and education. However, Americans haven't acquired this yet and its still dog-eat-dog and with all the racial divisions, there is a bigger than ever gap between rich and poor. Our nation is more elitist at the top than any other, and we have lower and lower standards for education, a horrific minimum wage. This is the quintessential betrayal of America, from within,also called the betrayal of democracy, the revolt of the elites. Its a very scary, greedy, desperate time in AMerica. That's right Virginia French is "still" the "other" language in the U.N.and woman are still not allowed to vote in 1/2 of the world. Both inequalities should change. In today's global economy learning French is about as beneficial as learning some form of pig latin. It's a country of socialist misfits who lost their patriotism and identity 60-years ago! First off, I would like to say that I think that Fowler is a disgrace and an idiot.
Okay, now on to what I disagree with on this blog. There is an ENORMOUS difference between public schools and international schools. I don't live in San Francisco, but from your description they are not tri-ligual. They teach many foreign languages, but that is nowhere near on par with what a bi-lingual international school will offer you. Bi-lingual schools don't just teach you the language, they teach classes in the language. Because they constantly speak to you in french and you must speak only french as well, you learn so much faster, because it simulates the way you would learn the language if you were attempting to learn while living in a french speaking country.
I went to a public high school, and took five years of french there. A girl transfered into our school from an international school, and she was so fluent in french that she took one AP french course and then completely maxed out what we could offer her while she was still a freshman.
So yes, that is the difference. It is extraordinary. And to be honest, if I could I would go to an international bi-lingual school. There is nothing wrong with wanting the best for your children. I think it is petty to resent that. Are you honestly saying that if you had that type of money you wouldn't want your kids to be as successful as they can be? And besides, I'm sure they have financial aid and such for kids that can't afford the school.
I went to a public school, but that does not make me resent those who are more privileged.
Oh, and as a last note, I would just like to restate that I hate Fowler, and in no way support him. I just have a problem with nit-picking what school his children go to.

just because a school is diverse does not mean that a student will learn all the different languages spoken around him. i went to a diverse public school were many languages were spoken and unless they were taught directly to the student then they would not learn it. and by the way just because the school is trilingual does not mean that every student learns 3 languages and i can guarantee that most students take only one because they have to and don't even try to learn it. parents these days are COMPLETELY blind to what is being taught and to what is going on in their kids life. you may think you know but trust me you have no idea unless you are a teacher at the school itself and unfortunately very few people really understand that. and even they don't even know what goes on sometimes. schools that are bilingual generally force the 2 languages to the point were you cannot get by unless you know them and usually have a much better education for the students to learn from. remember, public means everyone can go including people who don't want to apply themselves and drag everyone down with them because they disrupt education.

I was watching the subject Wifeswap episode with my 10 year old daughter - and we were both shocked by this father's behavior toward the guest wife in his house. Unbelieveable! People who act with this complete disregard for other humanbeings - are seriously messed up and need counseling. I am sure this poor excuse for a man has some type of diagnosiable mental condition. And at the very end of the segment - his wife actually seemed to condone his behavior! What kind of a life coach would marry a man like that? One the one hand allegedly trying to improve the lifes of others through her job as a life coach - while on the other hand living with such a horrible person who mistreats other people...Not to mention his obvious hatred for all that America stands for....I am glad that others voiced their concern over this jerk's behavior! We are all appalled - and really feel for the wife that was so senselessly attacked!

Stephen Fowler and his wife are not educated. They may know a list of facts, but they are quite ignorant people. They are also far from true wealth both in regard to money and spiritual qualities. They are ruining their children---not because they make them work, but a man who can insult a woman like that in front of their children and laugh is creating in his boy a wife-beating monster. In fact, I'd wager Fowler has struck his wife---something she hides. The inhumanity of his actions in fron tof his children leads me to want to see them taken from the home. Anyway, it seems the whole world has rejected this guy, so what more is there to say---but if you ever wanted confirmation that there are jerks in the world--its Fowler.
Fowler and the rest of us should remember that money, education, intelligence, work ethic and all these things are not what defines the human spirit. What does it mean to be human? Fowler is a classic text book cluster B narcissistic personality. They feel superior when they have the opportunity to belittle people. They feel that they are entitled to do so because they feel they are above everyone else. I am glad that it cost him professionally, maybe this will be a small lesson on how his disorder affects people. I agree with a few things that Mr. Fowler said about America and Education. I don't like the American Military (I don't live in America), Education is important and with better education you have a better chance of finding financial stability.
But I think that Mr. Fowler has a rotten personality, not all Americans are the way Mr. Fowler described (I have a few American friends) and no one has the right to look down on anyone and humiliate them on National TV.
This just goes to show that money can't buy class, personality and manners and I pity his poor children if they grow up just like thier father.

I currently live in Missouri, a St. Louis suburb, raised on the east coast though. I'd be more than happy to educate Stephen a little on the citizens of our country. There are rednecks and white trash all over this country darling, and your beloved city is, quite sadly, swarming with them. Certainly this is due to these individuals being bestowed with actual paychecks for being homeless, ha! It's no wonder that on the occasions I've visited SF, I've noticed a greater proliferation of these creatures each time I've visited. Something tells me that once enough people have seen his deplorable behavior on the telly, he may choose to collect that paycheck one day himself lol, rather than trying to dodge the mental darts coming at him from disgusted human beings everywhere he goes.
I've got two sons in college, one on scholarship for baseball (starting pitcher, school anonymous for obvious reasons), the other on academic scholarship at IU Bloomington, Hutton Honors College, etc. We've raised our sons to be high achievers, as apparently Stephen is aspiring to with his own, but we also place far, far greater importance on their generosity in this world. We are especially proud of their excellence in conversational skills, manners and treating the secretary, the janitor, the overweight person with dignity and respect.
Good Lord, I feel so incredibly sorry for this man who believes that a person's geographical location and bank account constitute their personal worth. Could it be that Stephen is running from his own karma, since he coddled his glass of wine throughout the entire episode like an infant's pacifier?
Finally, we do not expect everyone to make the choices we've made in life, but we felt convicted to downsize our home and lifestyle 4 years ago. Since we try to live philanthropically and are driven by community service, we simply felt hypocritical to live somewhat ostentaciously. I suggest that if Stephen is choosing to be grandstanding with his wardrobe of basic black tees, that he consider retiring his bidet of conspicuous and highly frivolous water consumption (news flash: it doesn't exactly clean a person's bum properly anyhow!), and also consider just how bourgeois the discussion of one's income is to those who truly DO have some refinement.
And those poor children. There wasn't a moment really, that they didn't appear to be a pebble in his shoe.

However: shut up. This person has the right to do what they will and they don't have to answer to any of you people. Of course he is ignorant to other economic environments-- he's rich. French is most definitely used as an INTERNATIONAL language to communicate, primarily among former French colonies.

Here in the Twin Cities, which I am very proud to say boasts some of the most intellegent individuals in the Mid-West (Target Corp, Gen Mills, Ecolab, Medtronic, RedBrick Health, etc. et. al) his behavior would be considered domestic abuse and would be prosecuted as such. The media needs to pick this up and run with it. My sincerest desire is for his wife to lose all of her clients, and he lose all respect in the VC world so that they get to see first hand what happens when we proud Americans decide that you're kind is not welcome here. "Bygone era"?...I live in Shanghai, and International schools are the norm for the children of most expats (I will be sending mine to local Chinese schools, as my company does not pay the 20k USD per year tuition), not to mention that I want my children to read and write (not just speak) Chinese. By the way "cantonese/mandarin" - two separate languages, so "cantonese, mandarin, and spanish..." - just thought I'd clear that up. 谢谢

I'm not exactly sure where to start, because I am torn between agreeing/not agreeing with your opinions. I am a college educated, mid-western, American loving, mother, wife and daughter. I love my country. I don't appreciate people moving to the United States to "better" themselves, or my country, only to berate and belittle it and the human beings who live there. I find Stephen Fowler to be closed minded and utterly disrespectful. On these subjects we agree. What I do not agree with, is your prejudicial opinions. I don't know if you even realize you were doing such. Not only am I: American, from the mid-west, college educated, and a wife, mother, and daughter, but I also live in Europe with my family. We live in an Expat community. My children literally go to an international school. My children interact on a daily bases with children from all over the world. As a result of living away from my country, I have come to a better understanding of the world, how the world views Americans, and how much I TRULY love my country. I am offended by the negative feelings evoked by your "international school" comment. Being around children from: Korea, China, Bangladesh, Japan, India, Tanzania, South Africa, Australia, and all over Europe has opened my children's eyes to all the possibilities, the views of others, and how we as brothers and sisters of the world are the same. We all have fears, opinions, etc. and it is with compassion and restraint that we should express them. Without judgment. So it is with sadness that I disagree with Stephen's lack of respect and lack of true world perspective, but I am also saddened by the judgment you have placed upon me, someone who doesn't even know me, my situation, or my reasoning. Someone whose reasons, unbeknownst to you, have driven by the desire to make decisions in which I feel have the best possible outcomes for my children and family. Please don't condemn me for placing my children in an international school. I have my reasons and I don't feel I need to explain them to anyone. I live in SF (as my IP address will show) and this is the first I'm hearing of this story. It has indeed been ignored by local media. I found it via Valleywag. I have not seen the show, but based on the descriptions I've read in the various blog posts, it sounds like we've got just a particularly vivid, flagrant and open embodiment of the characteristics commonly found not just in this city (that I love) but in NYC, LA, and in the humanities department of every college in America. This is what rich (and pseudo-rich) leftists are. That's just the way it is. And guess what, like it or not but the same sentiments (in deeply disguised form) exist in the present White House.
Oh, and regarding the comment about SF public schools: you are absolutely right, they are far more diverse than the French-American School (as the neighbors refer to it), and are struggling, at this very moment, to retain their ROTC programs, in the face of pressure from people like Stephen Fowler to kill those programs. Our present mayor, unfortunately, shares more than a few political ideas with Fowler.

International schools are hardly from a bygone era. There are international schools all over the world for exactly the kind of people you describe. There are probably thousands and thousands of them, including the French one this guy sends his kids to. Also, the quality of education at this school IS probably better than the quality at most San Fran public schools.

Some people have already pointed out your confusion of multilingual education and attending a diverse school, so I won't explain it again.
But I would just like to say that families wouldn't HAVE to shell out thousands of dollars a year to send their kids to a bilingual school if voters in States like California and Massachusetts would educate themselves on the value of bilingual education for children and society and recognize that ENGLISH IS NOT THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF THE UNITED STATES. Then we could reinstate public funding of these fantastic schools that offer our children the opportunity to learn a valuable skill.

Has anyone sent their kids to a school that is run for the military kids. We have kids that are born all over the world and have parents from all over the world. These kids are taught languages just to survive. I am very proud of my life and that5 my kids get to go to school.

Ok, I will admit that I do not watch reality TV and only heard of this fellow through an article I read.
So I probably am not qualified to post, but I did want to say that we are so far behind educationally in the United States that it isn't funny. I don't really think the Fowlers are doing anything wrong if they can afford to send their children to an excellent school where they can learn a second language. Every American child should be taught a second language beginning in the 1st grade.

I applaud Mr. Fowler for speaking his mind. That middle American mother was a joke of a person and she needed to hear everything that was told to her. Her kids are on a short road to wifebeaters and fatigue patterned clothing. I have dealt with those who choose to have fun their entire lives and they usually are the lazy poor that expect you to help when no effort has been made to better their lives on their part ever. I too have been at my wits end dealing with these people that like fun. Let us all play games and have fun. HOWEVER, I take exception to the whole idea of 'learning French is useless.'
I am British, married to an American and we have a beautiful baby boy together. As he grows up, we'll encourage him to learn French. Why? Because his grandparents live in France and we intend to visit often.
It's all very well for President Obama to go in front of thousands of hispanics and tell them not to worry about learning English - it's up to American kids to learn Spanish - but that's not true and it's not fair.
America is an English speaking nation and if we want our children to learn another language, it's up to them what they want to learn.
There are millions of Chinese immigrants in America. Should their parent's wish to teach them Cantonese or Mandarin be scoffed at as 'useless', like the author of this blog does?
I have secnd-generation Russian friends, whose parents teach them their mother tongue.
America is a cultural melting pot and there are hundreds of different languages kids might want to learn to better equate themselves with their cultural heritage and family history. In my case - possibly in the case of Fowler and his family - it's French.

Stephen Fowler's IQ is not 158. He did not demonstrate any indication of such supremely advanced intelligence. There is no doubt in my mind that he is between 128 and 140. However, this calls into mind what defines true intelligence? Ninety-five percent of Americans would have known better than to behave like Fowler in front of any video camera, let alone on national television. His words showed such a profound lack of insight into the consequences of his behavior, I am led to the conclusion that Fowler must suffer from a mental disorder or personality disorder. I agree that his wife should continue to encourage him to get help: I think we should encourage his wife to get help, as well.

Comments on Mr. Fowler are likely appropriate from many sources. The basis of the wife swap show, like other reality shows, is to make profit for the producers at the detriment of the society. Media airing of improper behavior does not help those, or help any of us, correct or protect the innocent from the wrongs done privately or publicly. The potential is these airings are to create a classroom for those prone to use others for there own abusive self-pleasured gain.
The foundations of family relationships, developed privately and intimately over many years of trial and effort are put on public display in a staged TV environment. In TV free forums, where the worst of good and bad human behavior can result, the worst behavior gains the most viewers and producers' profits.
Those 'Mr. Fowlers' are grossly numerous in society. Using the media to teach more potential 'Mr. Fowlers' is morally criminal.
Letting the few profit (personally and/or financially) which results in physical or mental abuse by those abusers has no basis of social morals.
I was a physically/mentality abused child in a family physically/mentally abused by a 'serial bully' father/husband. Victims like my family are innumerible in this world. Training to create another bully through the media is nauseating to me.

I agree. Enough! I am a black person and believe so called "diversity" has done a lot of damage to black folks. We are a pale version of our strong ancestors. Besides this "diversity" thing is a load of crock dreamed up by folks who want to off load the guilt of their prejudice. True diversity has nothing to do with a bunch of people from different backgrounds who just happen to be in the same place but don't really interact with each other, and go their separate ways at the end of the day. When folks start treating each other with dignity, respect and acknowledging the value of human beings, just for the sake of being human, then we can begin to value diversity. Until then, I want none of it. For those who do not agree and think they value diversity and are participating in it, think honestly about all the people of different races, ethnicities, cultures, gender, sexual orientation, etc. that you truly know; that you have over to your house and have honest conversations with; that you break bread with; share family stories, etc., then we can begin to talk about true diversity.

I am familiar with this particular school. I am a career secondary level English/ESL teacher, and several years ago I interviewed for a position at this school. It was founded by a group of French ex-patriots who had come to the Bay Area to work in Silicon Valley. They want to have their children maintain their language and culture while they assimilate the American language/culture. The parents that I met were nothing like those that appeared on the Wife Swap episode in question.

As an Englishman I take exception to the labeling of English people based on the antics of men like Stephen Fowler. I have livid in this country for 39 years and am very proud to be English and American. I support this country 100%, I served in the British Army for seven years and consider myself to be classless. Unfortunately Mr. Fowler has demonstrated a level of behavior that seems to be more and more prevalent in society. Mr. fowler moved to this country by choice and has exploited his opportunity and shown a very bad example of English men. I would ask the general public to not label all Englishmen on the antics of Mr Fowler, it is very obvious that he has no breeding, common sense, courtesy or respect for anyone.Mr. fowler my value education and maybe has a University degree but he is obviously not intelligent. She is now tri-lingual courtesy of: THE SCHOOL. she will know four languages by the end of her senior year there. please do not misinform the public on matters this big. but the things Stephen Fowler said were still unacceptable and rude.

As a) a briton b) a san francisco resident and c) an attendee of Mission High School, a public inner city school which is something like 60% african american - i completely agree with the point that you can pick up at least three languages if you make the effort in any school in san francisco. i am ashamed and dismayed at this man's behaviour, and would like to say he's not a "typical san franciscan" but merely a "typical elitist scumbag with too many degrees". please don't judge the british in this way - we are a country of 60 000 000 people and this is just one guy that's ruining it for the rest of us. myself, holding both american and british passports, consider both countries my home and have complete love and respect for them. if and when i join the military it could be for either country. don't join fowler in prejudice.

The school actually provides the opportunity to learn up to 5 languages: English, French, Mandarin/Spanish/Italian, Latin and German. I was a student at the same school and learned more than two languages, they're just not old enough to start the transition into learning multiple languages.

I feel you did not look far enough into the school's back round and teaching ideas. beginning in pre-kindergarden the children at their school undergo a very rigorus french education they have mostly french classes until third grade when they start dividing time up half and half between english and french. by around fifth grade the children are bilingual if the only other language they know is english, but many know other languages. My son has a friend who is fluent in portugese, another friend who is fluent in korean, and many people in his grade are fluent in mandarin and spanish. In middle school they become fluent in another language: Italian, Spanish, Mandarin, or German. if they choose to continue to high school they can choose to begin studying another language. Please check all of your information before you post it. Middle schoolers are required to take latin for one year and are allowed to take latin for another year if they want to.
What stephen fowler said does not portray the school's beliefs. Do not hold the school accountable for the very rude things he said.

International schools are certainly not of a by gone era and are still thriving. They provide a fantastic opportunity for ex-pats who move often (and would thus impede their childrens education if they were thrown into a local school every year or so to learn yet another new language). In addition those who want their children to be raised within a more cultured, nurturing and multi lingual school often find it a better alternative to the (unfortunately) severly underfunded, gang infested public schools. I have yet to come across a product of the public system who is bi lingual + due to their exposure at school.

just FYI, there are 19 language immersion programs in SF's public schools. A choice of Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Spanish. And a Japanese bi-lingual program. Alas, no French.

Others have clarified this but I grew up in SF, so I want to also. The public schools here are in really bad shape, which is why a lot of families try to get their kids into private schools. It's terrible actually, California ranks really low in education compared to the national average. So, because of wealthier families sending kids to private schools, this has resulted in very homogenized private school communities.
But the point w/respect to how languages are taught needs to be a little more true-to-fact. The bi-lingual school Renee is talking about is probably French American International School. It teaches kids all the standard subjects in both languages -- it truly is bi-lingual ed. This is different from other schools which offer foreign language as an additional subject but it isn't integrated into the whole curriculum. For example, at French American, kids might be taught math in French. The public schools in SF are NOT bi-lingual, with a couple of exceptions. Horace Mann Middle School is one of them -- it offers its curriculum in Spanish because over 60% of the students come from Spanish-speaking families and it's more important to get the kids caught up in math, science, and history than to force them to learn in a non-native language. But it has been controversial because some think the kids will lag in English (personally I think it's wonderful, having taught there for one year myself).
The reason that understanding this point is important is that the students from places like French American will leave the school with an amazing knowledge of French, able to say things like "decimal point" and "cell nucleus"--TRULY bilingual. Kids from schools where they simply learn French, Spanish, Mandarin, or German as a separate elective subject (most common 4 taught) are never immersed in the language and typically forget a lot of it over time. So like other commenters said, I think that bi-lingual ed should not be given a bad name just because these people are affiliated with the school. I'm sure the school administrators and other students and faculty can't be that pleased either....oh and I'm not positive that it is French American but it's a pretty good guess.

This is about the most OBVIOUS case of a "LITTLE MANS COMPLEX" that I have ever seen. This guy is of jockey stature (which would be fine if he had the spirit and courage of a jockey, but, he is a coward)and it is apparent to me that he feels insecure about ALL his small body parts.

Point of clarification. International schools are still in existence and very useful to expat children (it's very hard to be moved all around the world and still be on a K-12 system). While everything else you said was correct, international schools are not from a bygone era, and are in fact, extremely useful!

Yeah what he said was very uncalled for. not just on T.V. but what he's probably been telling his children to think and believe. he shouldn't beable to have his child since he is teaching them to think a way that they will be getting their @$$ kicked at school and on the walk home from the bus stop

Hey this guy is really messed up. He insults certain people that share similar characteristics with him. I hope that his children don't turn out just like him and i hope everything is okay with the family that he didn't just insult them, but there very lifestyale and those that have the same interest

Please don't refer to this man as "upper class"....just because he may promote himself this way, probably because of his accent, does not make him "upper class" by any means. Now the Queen is "upper class"...and she would sooner chop her own head off than insult a guest in her home or anywhere else for that matter. Class is not determined by how much money you have in the bank or what job you have, not in the UK anyway, it's determined by your blood line. In the UK this kind of behaviour is met with disdain and disgust and certainly would not lead others to believe you are "upper class".

The school that the kids go to is very academic and very good. There is nothing wrong with sending them there. The public schools in San Francisco are not very good. It is one of the reasons i chose to move out of the area. The only real problem with him is that he thinks he is better than most people and his poor kids don't get to enjoy life like normal kids.

There is nothing wrong with attending a private school, if anything it gives you an advantage in this game of life. The SF International school is an excellent school, superior to any SF public school. As a San Franciscan, I enjoy and relish the different peoples and cultures we are exposed to here. So many people striving for a better life and way of living that when you see the Budweiser crowd you wonder why so many Americans with the educational opportunities presented to them, and the freedom to be what you want to be, decide to be nothing more than fat, chain smoking, fast food eating slobs, that go to church every Sunday hoping to be redeemed. Get a clue, get a life, get off the fast food, increase your IQ and help build a better country.

I have a take on why he sends his clones to that expensive international school. Let's take a look at the racial composition of that school vs. the public school. Would it be to hard to say that in my opinion he sends them to an expensive private school so that non-Caucasians won't be around his precious clones? I guess the education he's teaching them is house work is for those of darker hue to perform as well since none of those two snobbish elitists seem to know how to do such.
The woman shouldn't be ignored as well since she doesn't have much interaction with her own children. What kind of a mother is "grumpy" with her children when they interfere with her narcissistic lifestyle? Obviously it's too late to stuff them both back up in her. How about foster care so Mr. and Mrs. Fowler can concentrate on who really matters to them, the reflection in the mirror. The both of them are a pair made for eachother, sanctimonious to the core prattling to each other it would seem how better they are to everyone else but always reminding themselves they believe in equality. It's one thing to say you do on that note it's another thing to practice it and they obviously don't practice what they preach. Good show, jolly good, pip pip and all.
