This is what YOU can do
As the Stephen Fowler debacle is nearing its end, I'd like to ask you for some help. Our friend Stephen is doing the right thing by keeping himself out of the news and he even managed not to be mentioned in the San Francisco Chronicle which is an accomplishment by itself. ABC will probably never air this show again but they sure like the press they got for this one. So it's all on us to preserve Stephen's legacy.
1. In order to keep this site in the top Google rankings it needs to be linked to. As long as you are mad at Stephen Fowler you should post links to this site ( blog.stephenfowlersucks.com ) here and there and everywhere.
2. Make sure there is always a copy of the Fowler videos on youtube. A brief description on how to do this is here: http://blog.stephenfowlersucks.com/2009/02/10/a-word-about-fowler-videos.aspx
3. Keep an eye on Stephen's business ( Terranova Bioenergy and others ) and Renee's ( Mind For Body ). They always appreciate a friendly review on one of the many review sites.
4. Sign up for Google Alerts as I mentioned yesterday. This will give you a list of mostly uninteresting and unrelated Stephen Fowler news, BUT, if he happens to slip again you will be the first to know.( www.google.com/alerts?hl=en&q=stephen+fowler&ie=UTF8&t=1 )
5. I set up an email address where can contact me directly. It's the name of this website (without the dot come) at gmail dot com.
That's it and thanks for all the fish!

How about letters to the editor of that newspaper? Petitions, maybe?

Letters to the editor? About what??? Petitions for what? "We the undersigned demand to see Stephen Fowler tarred and feathered and kicked out of the United States because he called a Missouri woman a 'dumb redneck' and said it's a good thing that poor people aspire to the military, and otherwise treated the poor woman to two weeks of insults, just like almost every other woman that appears on that show."
I've just watched an episode of Wife Swap that I DVR'd yesterday where a husband told his new wife that she looked like a "white trash wh***". I've also recently heard a new wife called a "fat b****" in front of his children.
The only reason anybody gives a shite about Stephen Fowler is because he said what he said with a British accent. Every other husband is insulting and demeaning, just like Gayla's husband was to Stephen Fowler's wife.
My big question is, why do y'all still care? I live 10 miles from the Longs in a major metropolitan area, and I don't think one single blogger has mentioned the swap. This is such a non-issue. The man has apologized. His life has been wrecked.
Reply to this
I meant to say, not one single local blogger has written about the swap. Probably for the same reasons I haven't, because it was such an almost completely unmitigated disaster. Taken together, the two families paint a pretty dim picture of the state of humanity in America. But I don't blame that on them. It was ABC's fault.
Reply to this
Rubbish. ABC turned a camera on him, but he's completely responsible for his actions. Yes, the families are supposed to be contrary. The show would be boring otherwise. But Fowler was ABUSIVE. That's not in the script, and it's not called for. Most of the husbands on that show are gruff about the rules and that's part of the show. But this guy was personally abusive to Gayla and offended not only Gayla personally, but also everybody else in the country and the military men and women that serve to protect it. That's not ABC's fault. That's all Stephen Fowler.
Part of the reason people continue to be so hostile about Fowler and his actions is that he's comepletly non-repentant. He acts as if he's perfectly justified to behave the way he did (like any self-respecting sociopath would) and he's making no REAL apologies for it. You don't piss on America and expect America not to get pissed off back. He needs to leave this country that he holds in such contempt, and quick.
And if his wife doesn't have the smarts to realize that she's just a prop he uses to stroke his ego with (because she's a lowly American and she's got certificates, not degrees)... she can go with him. Leave those poor hostages... I mean children... with somebody who will raise them in a healthy environment and go. See ya. Buh-bye.

Amen! I have a feeling that Leigh Ann is Renee with the fake name. If she is not then I apologize. If Leigh Ann does not care about it then what the hell she keeps coming here and tell us to forget it and move on? I dislike Stephen Foul (Fowler). She seems to pity Stephen and tries to place blame on ABC when the insutls came from Stephen Foul's mouth.
Reply to this
I doubt that anyone would care for a reality show aimed at portraying a bright picture of American families. That's like expecting a Jerry Springer show where friends and family reunite and hug each and kiss other. Maybe PBS would be interested.
ABC's FAULT? Turn that right back on the viewers, because popularity kept the show alive. The Fowler incident just added some steroid on top of everything. ABC may start looking for even more controversy for the show, and make it even more notorious. Fowler set a bar that has to be crossed to make future episodes memorable.
What's wrong with the state of humanity portrayed by the Longs? They live according to a value set they inherited, did their best to behave themselves given the circumstances, and said they would make some healthy lifestyle changes based on what they learned during a week. I wish I had their level of tolerance and willingness and ability to change. There's such a huge fuss about those ATV's. We think nothing of flying and driving long distances.

LeeAnn, using 'y'all' buys you as much street cred as a bearded guy in a Hooter girl uniform. But since you brought it up - a vast majority of those who took a few moments of their day (and there will be many others long into the future) do not watch this ABC show for a number of reasons (annoying, time spent better elsewhere, etc.). They were led to watch this particular episode as the furor grew and instead of dismissing it as an overreaction, felt compelled to add their voice to the conversation. Consider it a very big watercooler. Fowler and his wife stood out (if appropriate to use that term?) even against the backdrop of other shows as well as this one. Incidentally, having spent a few years working in the academia, there were quite a few PhD's chatting about the episodes. None of them (or those joining in) said ya'll. You know, it's so..um.... pedestrian and common....

Not to bash Fowler, per se, but to ask why such a prominent story has gone sorely overlooked by the local media. It's the newspapers job to report the news, not pick and choose what it wants to pring. I mean.. right?
Reply to this
Biding, yes - of course you are right... unless, of course, the 'unbiased reporters' are more concerned with covering anything else BUT a story which 1. sheds a rather unpleasant light on a rather large portion of the local polulation and 2. my possibly invite a conversation they do not wish to have, i.e. some stereotypes which may just may be more true than the locals wish to admit.
Reply to this
Then it's a great chance for the locals to set the record straight. By not saying anything, they're letting Stephen Fowler's example speak for them. Not the best idea. If I were in his area, I'd be letting the world know that he does NOT speak for me.
Reply to this
Absolutly agreed. It's the whole chicken & egg thing (sorry - here we go with the eggs again). Pretending that 'they' are above this discussion just underscores that there may be something to the uproar. It's unfortunate and a missed opportunity for a community which sees itself as being particularly open minded and progressive (... could it be ... 'unlike the rest of the country') fails to breach a topic which concerns itself. Sort of makes SF progressives sound hypocritical. It's not a matter of defending but rather discussing something which seems to be of interest to the rest of the country. All I can think of is Catherine Tate's Lauren character...'I'm not bovvereed'...

yes, i agree completely!
100% this family DOES NOT REPRESENT San Francisco!
If you fun-loving and tolerant, you're welcome here.
If you're like both of the Fowlers, well sure you can live here, but good luck with REALITY.
Just so the kids know, because someday they will read this, they are not alone.
Most parents mean well, and work with what they've got.

It would be wonderful if Mr. Fowler were to have the privilege to meet some of the military memebrs and their families in an attempt to understand why certain people chose such a profession. Perhaps it would be too much to expect him to have an open mind regarding anything in which he is not comfortable. Such is life.

If she thinks that one has nothing to do with the other, she's as delusional as her husband. She can't expect clients and potential clients to just forget what happened on that show. She has to realize that what happened on the Wife Swap show affects the public, and it's the public she wants to attract as clients. It sounds like she hasn't learned a single thing.
By the way, you can write to the owner/moderator of a yahoo group without being a member. All you have to do is address your email to: insideoutweightloss-owner@yahoogroups.com and you can let her know what you think without having to wait to be approved as a member.

Long after the other Stephen Fowler (on American Idol) is a memory, this blog will still be up and running. There's still a lot of material to be mined here re human behavior, US-UK relations, John Stuart Mill's "social contract", political pretentiousness, that unique brand of Bay Area hypocrisy, general shitheadedness, etc. The Fowlers have certainly given me a glimpse into an attitude and way of life I'm not going to easily forget. The whole incident deserves a New York Magazine-style piece--anyone up for writing it?

Eh. Already forgotten. I have my own husband, my own child, and frankly, my own. I'm generally disaffected by Stephen Fowler, who seemed no more crude and disgusting and "bad for children" than say, most of the cartoons on the Cartoon Network.
It's amazing to me how moved to action some of us can get in regards to a tv show, but when it comes to defending real lives(from death and destruction i.e., war, famine, child abuse) many of us seem to not know what to do. Is this what our country has come to? We are moved to outrage by a Stephen Fowler or a Sponge Bob Square Pants, but when real issues arise, where is the mass protest? Gone are the 60's and 70's I suppose. All of this energy should be put into boycotting and protesting this companies that keep poisoning our population with salmonela, lead, and the how ever many hundreds or so known carcinogens that are planted in our products.

As for the debacle winding down, I have to disagree. The word is just getting out on this, and those of us who don't watch reality television and those of us who are active and retired military, are just getting wind of the "Fowler Files".
Let me assure you, this is now spreading though military and law enforcement circles arcoss the globe. And it is not being well received.
The man is an outright loathesome coward. His wife is just as bad. The way he felt so free with his views on the overweight population in the US would lead any reasonable person to conclude that this is a common discussion in the household, and that his wife concurs in the assessments of her husband. I am sure that is great for her business.
Mr. Fowler is certainly entitled to his views. That is a right that people like myself were and are willing to lay down our lives to protect. But there does come a point, as recognized by our Supreme Court, where one's rights begin to threaten those of others. You cannot yell "fire" in a crowded theater, even though your freedom to speech is protected. In some instances, such speech can serve as justifiable provocation for a response that goes beyond mere words. Mr. Fowler was indeed provocative. And his speech crossed the line of mere insulting behavior. Frankly, I would not have been surprised at all if his target's husband had reached across the table and provided some sensitivity training right then in there in the form of a good "American" ass kicking of his noble English ass. Manners are a learned behavior, and the reinforcement one uses to teach manners varies by the individual. In Fowler's case, a serious dose of negative reinforcement is not only justified, it is a necessary response to Fowler's cry for its use. Now that would have made great TV!
Mr. Fowler would do well to recall (I take it that his education included history) that common American citizens have an unblemished record with regard to Royal Asskickings. In Fowler's case, given his demure physique and his outward lack of testosterone, we would probably have to dispatch one of our grandmothers to the task, just to insure that things were as fair as we could make them during the 47 seconds it would take for granny to turn him into a quivering, incontinent, spineless mass crying for his Tommie Mommie. The Spirit of '76 still lives in the US, and Mr. Fowler may want to avoid a modern reenactment.
Better yet, since this nation does not seem to be Mr. Fowler's cup of tea, may we wish you a hearty bon voyage to a more cultured country. And don't let the door hit you in your Limey ass on the way out.
I realize that such a view from the cannon fodder of America who carried two majors in college and a job and still managed to gradutate in the top 10%, and who graduated in the top 10 in a doctorate while working steadily through the program, might not be meet the lofty Fowler (or is it "fouler"?) standard. I can only hope.
Reply to this
Well, fresh blood is always welcome, and maybe this can move through to different circles like waves. But clearly, the peak stage for this particular incident is past. That doesn't mean it will die down, because there are net-paparazzi hunting down every bit of news and even the slightest slip-ups by Fowler will get a disproportionate amount of buzz.
I hope a new Wikipedia entry is made for 'this' Stephen Fowler, because the one there is a famous scientist.
Keep spreading the word, if only to alert people to be more conscious of the fallout from letting the inner jerk run wild on national TV, or in other public fora.

Renee, on the swap:
Q: How did the kids cope with the swap?
A: My kids found it difficult. They felt Gayla didn't take the time to understand them and learn what they find fun. Instead she branded us the "no-fun family," and this hurt my kids and offended my husband. The kids did get some perspective on their lives. They now better appreciate the importance of applying themselves in school and see the value of education, and the risks of not getting a good education.
Good lord, she really is as bad as he is. Those poor kids are doomed.
Reply to this
Ah, yes - mini Fowlers understood that they must agree with Mom and Dad and agree that that Gayla woman was really mean and fat and should stay where she is, beneath them. If they do not behave, they will not get their daily ration of carob flavored tofu. Programming at its best. Nice job, Renee. I wonder if she limits her hypnosis sessions with them to her 'kid' time or if she schedules is as a separate activity? Double Plus Good.
Reply to this
She can't stand more than an hour with them, remember. She's got to make those programming sessions quick.
If they're LUCKY those kids will turn out to be mini Fowlers. More likely, they'll either turn to substance abuse, overt sexuality, or they'll murder their parents in their sleep and get off on an affirmative action defense.
Reply to this
Well, I've got some good advice for Renee - better living through chemistry. I (almost) feel terrible thinking this, but when I first saw her jumping around in a 'release dance' or what ever it was, all I could think of 'a limp noodle in a mosh pit'. If they are lucky, the kids will just end up pearcing a few nipples and an odd mohawk or two. That's being an optimist.

She's trying to find substance with her pseudo-psychobabble bullsh*t where there is none, and he's trying to inflate his ego by overstating his IQ based on some half-baked equivalency pseudo-degree. They're both cut from the same bolt of cloth, and it's the poor kids that are suffering for it.

As someone who spends all his time in San Francisco, and as a good American, I'd like to stick up for FREEDOM of CHOICE. I AM AMERICAN, TOO, AND I EAT ORGANIC WHEN I CAN, BUT THIS DUDE FOWLER & HIS WIFE ARE ECO-NAZIS.

oh yeah, forgot to add...
1) Paintball is awesome excersize. She could have done soooo much with teaching lateral speed, proper roll-technique, formation, and periphal comprehension. Clearly, this was either edited out, or that woman from SF missed a GREAT opportunity to bond with this family. what was she thinking?
2) the Mom from the Midwest is 100% correct when she says "Kids will trust you if you are someone who has fun."
why raise your children to make whatever "better choice" choice there is, if you have to shove the morality of "better-choice" down their throat?
day after day?
teach them to understand themselves, where they come from, and how they are raised. then the KIDS can enjoy a garden burger with bacon, and have FUN DOING IT.
(by the way, that's my favorite, a no-meat pattie with four strips of bacon.
here in SF i can order that anywhere. just cuz most people can understand this. Fowler & company are WAY too crazy strict about making healthy choices.)
3) i want to let America know that this portrait of SF is totally uncool. THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE HERE WHO DON"T EAT ORGANIC. there are lots of reasons not to eat organic food. some people JUST CHOOSE NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. some people CANNOT AFFORD IT (or a bidet.)
IN MOST PLACES IN THIS COUNTRY, ORGANIC IS simply NOT AVAILABLE.
so this couple from Noe Valley, who can afford a housekeeper and private school and piano and balet and a home in SF, well they can just stay up there in NOE VALLEY.
SERIOUSLY. KEEP YOUR ECO-NAZI PURITAN MORALITY TO YOURSELVES.
i'd say don't even try to force it on your kids. SF is enough fun and already on the right track, you know, progressive. MAYBE THESE PARENTS JUST DON'T REALIZE they are over-parenting. MAYBE THE PARENTS IN MIDDLE-AMERICA DON'T REALIZE THEY ARE UNDER_PARENTING.
so, as far as the Fowlers are concerned, just by living in SF the kids will grow up WITH THE OPTION to make the best choice available, or not.
MANY AREAS IN AMERICA DO NOT HAVE THE ACTUAL RESTAURANTS OR MARKETS TO BUY YOUR "ORGANIC" FOOD, but your kids do in Noe Valley, or they can DRIVE TO BUY IT. trust me, most people want a better world, and your kids will figure it out - without you jamming it up their moral compass.)
4) if you take a general approach to parenting, and raise your kids with ENOUGH TRAINING TO MAKE GOOD & HEALTHY CHOICES, then we can all hope for the best. moralism, whether Eco-Liberal or Heartland-America, just keeps dividing us.
5) A house divided...
6) i noticed that NONE of the advanced education degrees were for "Certified Good Person."
7) it's totally possible that most of this characterization (of both families) is due to the EDITORS and PRODUCERS...IS IT?
or is this really "REALITY" tv?
8) sincerely, Nun Zilla

I'm a bit perplexed. I think that your comments are well meant yet there is that precise strain of 'progressive' vs. 'heartland of America' theme over and over and over again. I really must respectfully question the grounds for this rather off base presumption that there are not progressives all over the country. "i'd say don't even try to force it on your kids. " Whoa, nelly. There are plenty of intellectuals, progressives, cultured and (all other sorts of people) living in the parts of America which you've just dismissed as inadequately prepared to parent. This generalization alone seems rather elitist, sheltered and short sighted. I would respectfully suggest that it is this type of narrow logic which contributed to the outrage which followed Fowler & wife show. Just something to consider?

Thanks, that was unexpected. Well, for what it's worth - the premise of the show, as annoying as it may be at times, is a good one. It allows an opportunity to consider how what we consider as 'normal' for us may be quite the opposite to others. The Longs lived (and ate) in a manner they learned from their parents and did the best with what they got. They clearly love each other and were open to new ideas on a level which S&R do not have. It was a contrast of depth vs. shallow and self aggrandizing. Based on what we witnessed, it was actually the Long family which was the more progressive of the two if the gage is actually 'most improved'. When one starts from a place of privilege, exercising healthy eating habits is not that complicated but the Fowlers missed some very valuable lessons and that's a (very public shame). The Long family will be ok. Fowlers - it remains to be seen. It's unfortunate.

Its really a good thing that the person writing this blog is being so very careful about how they suggest people "keep an eye" on this Fowler dude.
A few steps in the wrong direction and you'd be up to your ears in very justified lawsuits.

s been struggling to make amends ever since. As he absolutely should be.
So now....what's YOUR excuse?

Says the guy who's trolling the board, too. Can't have it both ways, dude. You can't participate (therefore perpetuating it) and complain about it, too. You're as guilty as anybody you're trying to condemn.
If only he were trying to make amends, people might not be screaming for his head quite so loudly.
Look, it's human to make mistakes, say things we regret and behave in ways we wish we hadn't. Everybody does it. The difference is, MOST people are sorry, apologize, and sincerely try to make up for it. Stephen Fowler has done nothing to suggest he's sorry for what he said and did on that show. His wife tried to throw some spackle on it by posting some half-baked apology on her website, not to make amends, but to try to save her business. That's not good enough. If anything, it suggests that she and her husband think we're stupid enough to fall for such a lame effort, further insulting our intelligence. Well, we're not having it.
If this site and the things said on it offend you so deeply, hit the back button and go back to watching reruns on Nickelodeon.com. If you do keep coming back, pull up some popcorn and jump on in. The water's fine.

So if you don't agree with the tone of this board you're 'trolling' - and by expressing disagreement you're just as bad anyway by participating?
That is some strange logic...
The guy was remarkably stupid and awful (as most are on that show - but he really went that extra mile).
But he has apologized, his wife has apologized, and they have been pretty shredded by this since. And it looks like you won't rest until he's committed ritual suicide as a sign of remorse...
What exactly is going to be enough of a punishment for you?

Trust me this is NOT ending. We will prevail and we will make them broke. Remember the Megan Meier story with Lori Drew? They're broke now. Trust me, these two idiots are going to be broke. I only JUST heard about it, and I'm going to make sure that it's everywhere.

Mrs. E - There is one huge difference between this and the Lori Drew case - noone died. Another major difference in how the cases ended up = the community. Steven's neighbors are not going to demand that he move...in fact the majority of his neighbors probably agree with his views on fat midwesterners.

Watched the show with my wife.We both wanted to punch this guy in the face. There is no way that he was acting for the camera; it was the real thing. He is everything we don't want our children to grow to be; I pity his children. We DON"T believe this cretin is representative of San Francisco, but I am happy he is not my neighbor (elitist snob)!

Has anyone published a transcript of his comments?
I don't watch the show and haven't been able to see any of the videos. I'm particularly interested in what he had to say about the military. I served 21 years in the Army which helped me fund an A.A., B.S in two majors, an M.A. and a Ph.D. - I doubt this schmuck has anywhere near my level of education and experience.

You can enjoy the low lights here. The transcript would not do it justice - how does one spell Fowler's bizzarro cackle after each comment? on Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Eh4jpSNn-Q&feature=related

I saw the show when it aired because I watch it now and then for all the drama it produces.IT is in my opinion (due to life lessons) that people from the uk generally dislike america.I would predict that this comes from jealousy more than being an uneducated lot as people from the uk would like to believe.Stephen fowler used the word mean for both the english definitions. HE was mean and he meant to be.IT comes from his bigoted upbringing in his native land.My first wife's sister had an english boyfriend named IAN who was just like stephen. IT came to be that IAN was nothing more than a con man and a suspected child molester who was always trying to con people out of money.Stephen kind of reminds me of IAN and in the end im sure his wife who is american will probably get sick of his crap and divorce him like the rest of america does anyhow. So in the end he'll probably go back to where he came from and not pay any child support even after he's cleaned out his wife's bank account. ha ha lol wait and see this probably will happen!

Thank you so much for this site!! I tried in vain to find that episode so I could show just how absurd this guy is. I think his wife was mortified. It never fails to make me wonder, if the Brits hate us so much, why do they keep coming across? Especially here in Florida!!!
Keep the site going!

Just saw a clip online that lead me to this website, but I have to ask...
Why is there still such controversy about this guy? From the highlights I've seen, yes, he definitely acted like an ass, but we're all guilty of buying into stereotypes the way he did. It just so happens that he got caught while the majority of us skate by.
When I watched his behavior, I found myself wondering what perceptions I have about the overweight and military, and how I may be passing those along to my children. It made me think about what my actions teach my children (don't worry - I believe my example teaches tolerance, whew!) about people that are different than we are.
There are a lot of people that may think they know what I'm like because I live in Las Vegas but I rest assured that they DON'T know, so what's the big deal? People will think the things they do and sometimes their mouths will run when they obviously have no idea what they're talking about. But if we all know this guy hasn't a clue about Midwesterners or our military, why take such offense? All we're doing is giving him control over our emotions, and really, would you want someone like him controlling ANY part of your lives?

Good questions but, and I assume you feel the same way because you're here, people feel outraged at the way he treated this woman. He wears "tree hugger" tee shirts but treating a human being right is not in his hypocritical vocabulary.
I'm here because I am nothing less than outraged at his behavior.

i believe that if that was my wife he was talking to they would need to hook a microphone and a speaker to his rear end cause that would be the only way he could communicate. i'm not the most wonderful person in the world but i don't ridicule on other's knowledge. i believe that there aren't stupid people, people just do stupid things. but in fowlers case i would have to definitly make an exeption

Common sense does not apply to SFowler nor does 'telling it like it is'. The only thing he wished to do was to hear himself talk. His interactions with his children in front of Gayla really gave me the creeps.
As far as having another reality or talk show and other people's skeletons in the closet? Mr. & Mrs. Fowler applied to be on the show, got paid well, and I'm quite sure that their skeletons haven't are still rather well hidden - far from it. Someone with common sense, understanding of what this show was about and how to convey one's values would have never gone on this show. Do not blame the public for the backlash - it's a death of a thousand paper cuts. He had us at 'hello'.

I dislike Steven Fowler as much as the next guy. Is he an idiot? Absolutely. Are his kids at fault? Nope. And you've basically turned their lives into a fiasco in the process. Yes, he's a turd, but at what point do you make yourself the bigger turd by dedicating your site to destroying him? He needed to learn some humility, and you are making the same pathetic mistakes he did.
Disclaimer: Steven Fowler is a pig, but don't become a pig along with him... he paid a price. It's America and it's also about making mistakes and making a comeback.

Don't you have enough intellect to realize that the show's producers and writers likely encouraged his 'elitist' behavior to sell more drama and provide mindless drivel for vapid laggards such as yourself? He was rude and insulting. What's the big deal? Doesn't he have a Constitutional Right to say whatever he likes? Fowler spoke his mind, polite or not. Try getting a politician to be that honest.

I didn't read all the comments but for someone who is so intelligent, Stephen Fowler showed how ignorant he is. My husband and I moved to a small mountain town from the big city several years ago and have learned that not all people have the same opportunities that others have. And while most of this mountain has no formal education, they are some of the smartest people I know. I have learned so much from them. And when the world comes to an end, these are the folks I want to be with because they know how to hunt and fish and do a whole lot with just a little. Also, I don't know why anyone would want to be a client of his wife's business seeing how they feel about overweight people. It was very arrogant of her to say that she doesn't remember any of the other gals rules which leads me to believe that she must feel like her husband does about the very people she ascribes to care so much about. So here on the mountain, while I help others understand paperwork and complete forms and read legal documents, they are teaching me how to survive. It is a win win. Stephen Fowler would do well to remember that you are to help those who are less fortunate than you because "but for the Grace of God, the go I". Most of the wife swaps I watch have positive results for both families as what they are really searching for is balance but this particular wife swap was painful and hurtful to watch.

The funniest thing about this is the fact that people such as your self are trying to use this poor mans mistakes and shortcommings to jumpstart your pathetic 15 minutes of fame.It seems to me that you are bashing him just like he was bashing that poor lady from Missouri.

Look, he will get what is coming to him whatever that is. I think he has paid more than enough to have his livelihood and that of his wife's threatened. Now, he is living in seclusion with his family. He behaved atrociously and was threatened and embarrassed. When is enough enough? Child molesters get treated better than this. And I do NOT think he is worse than a child molester however horrible his behavior was.
I think the reason people get so worked up about this situation is that they identify so strongly with that Missouri woman. They know what it feels likes to be degraded. And now we have someone to direct our anger to. He has paid a lot for his behavior. At some point, you need to just move on.
Feeling enraged is not a license to do whatever you want. I hope this all dies down because people deserve a life.
You reap what you sow as Stephen has shown.

I am amazed at the number of Fowler defenders here. That includes those of you who who excuse his behavior, ridicule the host and commenters who have been outraged by Fouler's antics, and those who feign surprise at the reaction.
You can't seem to understand the level of outrage that exists here. You cannot because you wear the same rose colored glasses as Fouler. Your elitism has detached you from everything and everyone that does not meet your lofty standards.
People are outraged because Fouler is emblematic of what is disturbingly wrong with this country. He is the quintessential effite snob that spends his life looking down his nose at the people who do most of the living, and dying in the country. The people that embrace the values and principles that built this nation, unlike those of Fouler's ilk that are hell bent on tearing it apart as part of some grand utopian social experiment.
People are sick and tired of paying for the mistakes and sheer unbridled lunacy that has taken over places like San Francisco. If you want to be everything to everybody, fine and dandy. Just don't come hat in hand to the US Treasury and expect people from other states to bail you out. You made your bed, now sleep in it.
People are tired of being told that the values that built this country are antiquated (clinging to guns and bibles). People are tired of having the Constitution viewed as an annoying hinderance and trampled upon by the likes of Fouler. And people are tired of hearing this citizen of the world crap - we are first and foremost citizens of the United States. No other country has the freedom we have here. No other country has made the sacrifices in coin and blood to preserve not only our own freedoms but those of other nations. We are the first to support disaster relief efforts across the globe.
People are fatigued at the continuous whining, complaining and bashing regarding their country. If you do not like the republic (not a democracy, mind you) established under our Constitution, find another country that is more to your liking. If you want to make changes, fine. But you do not have to tear down the foundation of a house to add new wall treatments to a room. Our form of government is what it is, and you will not change that without a revolution. Trust me when I say you will get more than a little resistance to that plan, especially from those of us who have sworn to protect the Constitution of the US from all enemies, foreign and domestic.
Fouler has his freedom of speech and he can say what he wants. However, and this is going to shock the Foulers' of the world and his apoligists, with freedom comes responsibility and accountability. That is a notion that the far left has attempted to legislate out of existence.
Fouler now has to live with the consequences of the exercise of his Constitutional Right to speak freely. Responsibility is something that goes hand in hand with freedom.

Sorry, jstele! If Fowler's behavior offended just those who identify with the Long family, this forum's size would be half. There are many literate and thoughtful responses from participants who've never had contact with rural America, hold higher degrees, bigger accounts and more influence than Fowler but who were equally outraged by his behavior. He's been condemned by a part of the society to which he so desperately aspires. It is NOT about identifying alone, but rather about condemning a pattern of abusive behavior which he only had the ba**s to showcase because he felt safe. There is a substantial chunk of comments from people who have nothing in common with Gayla nor have ever been degraded. We are here to say that this self imposed study in arrogance and outright stupidity reached the audience in ways he could not have anticipated but well deserved. This show's response reached the tipping point and has a life of its own. Ignore the illiterate or belligerent fringe is you must, but vast majority of evenly distributed anger remains.

OK, I wrote too quickly and omitted something important (to me) - the rural America also holds tons of talent and continues to produce valued contributors to society. I could never imagine eating like they do but it's not unexpected because heavy foods are traditional - just look at any Denny's commercial or any fast food joint. It' cheap, fast and easy. The only way his comments would have any merit IF they swapped spouses from a meth cooking trailer and Renee was forced to turn tricks and learn a new 'recipe'. Fowler could have come up with a new t-shirt to wear - "Math not Meth".

I highly doubt that the real Mr. Feferman would post his personal information on this blog and to the person who did, shame on you! I dispise Fowler and have little regard for his spouse, but it is uncalled for to harass those who associated with them for business purposes. It is irrational. Don't like a person's conduct? Boycott their products, blog and discuss. Do NOT assume that the a business association is unequivocally an endorsement of Fowler's behavior. There may be a link but by no means, a given. I hope that everyone resists the urge to go any further. Absurd knee jerk impulse should not result in innocent people's harassment!

The real problem isn't a rude elitist insulting someone. The problem is that people get so upset over a fabricated issue on "reality" tv. How many people would watch if they didn't select the couples to clash and have drama?
It's all entertainment but it involves real people. I couldn't see getting that upset over two people I don't know. I guess some people like to be upset and have a lot of free time.

whoa, you guys. It's just a stupid show where they pair up families that they KNOW will be conflicted. It was only for ONE week, there's no reason to try to ruin someone else's life because you're angry and don't agree with their opinions. It's not humane.
And writing angry reviews at their businesses' websites is not okay at all.
Sure, Stephen was a little out of line, but trying to destroy his life and possibly his job won't solve anything.
Wife Swap has a common formula where the wife is a sweet simpleton and the husband is a demonized disrespectful brute. Seeing as practically all their shows are like this, it's possible that they DID ask him to "ham it up" a bit.
Seriously, everyone is taking this way too far with "death threats" and such. It's like the octuplet mom...no one gives a damn anymore.

I agree with Chris- There is a difference between reality and reality TV. Look into your own selves and see where this fountain of anger is coming from- there is no reason to be so threatened by some guy on a TV show

You edited my comment. I don't understand why you would do that when it was respectful and fair. I asked, "When is enough enough? When his life is threatened?", etc. I guess you didn't want to publish it because it made you feel guilty.
Who said that one had to be uneducated to identify with the Missouri woman?
You are getting too consumed with this issue. You are NOT the victim. I bet the Missouri woman has gotten over it faster than you have. When will you be satisfied that he has paid the price? What is the price?

I think the biggest point here is the fact that he is NOT of this country and talking smack about us. I would rather have an immigrant from Mexico (and no, I"m not pro-illegal immigration) who comes here to work than someone who comes here to exploit the very values of the US!!
Reply to this
For me, the incredulity of the guy's behavior wasn't because he's not "of this country" -- it's great to travel and meet people from all over the world -- rather, I was just astounded at how nervy & rude this guy was. My husband and I watched the show with dropped jaws, like just about everyone else I guess. We didn't care that he was from another country; England is a beautiful place and, if it weren't for the British, we might not even be here writing on this interesting & entertaining website right now.
But hey, hands-down the guy was a complete idiot. He should never have said things like that when he knew his every move was being recorded; what a nut! The show's producers, writers, etc. obviously "slanted" him as the "heavy", as they must do in order to create the dramatics which keep us from changing the channel, BUT... they certainly had a goldmine to work from with this fellow! Yikes! Can you imagine what it must be like to BE Stephen Fowler right now? Ouch!!

Also the local alternative rag, the "Pitch Weekly" also covered it. so rest assured people in Kansas City now are fully aware of the story done to one of their own.

I just discovered this on YouTube and I’m so angry! The way Stephen Fowler treated Gayla was inexcusable. As I was watching, I felt myself getting madder and madder. How could someone behave that way? As I was watching it also occurred to me that it was ABC’s choice to give him the airtime. After Stephen has been punished sufficiently…and it looks like you've already done a fine job of that
This is the number for Disney ABC corporate headquarters and Anne Sweeney is the president. You won’t actually get to talk to her, but if enough of us call in, ABC will get the message and be more careful next time they try to exploit one of our own just for the ratings! They’ve made millions off of this episode alone…and they’re going to push it even farther next time if they think they can get away with it.

To tall drink of water - while I agree that it was a questionable choice by ABC to air the episode, I will vehemently disagree with the idea that Stephen Fowler was explited and that he is one of our own. He is hardly one, unless by our own you mean individuals who feel as he does but simply have enough sense not to verbalize it on a national tv show. If by that you mean that he is a citizen of the country where he enjoys the protection, business opportunities, low tax structure and other benefits, then I will say that it was just one dumb luck step removed as it was merely a by-product of his marriage to a woman who, by admission, is rather uncomfortable with her citizenship and dismisses it as a random occurrence. He applied to the show, auditioned and was accepted. He was proud as a peacock and fluffed his tail out until he could do no more. He signed contracts which no doubt spelled out very clearly that the content and editing is wholly under ABC's control - and he signed them. He and his partner deliberately put themselves in this situation. While Renee, still an unpleasant creature, stuck by the rules, Fowler (lacking common sense or boundaries) pushed it off a cliff. ABC gave him a forum which he wanted, desperately, and offered him up... warts and all. NO, I do not think that Mr. Fowler was exploited - no more that the Longs were. The only real victims here (aside from Gayla Long) were Fowler's children. When the stack of legal paperwork hit the ABC exec's desks, they were more worried about protecting each stranger from the other - not the children of a family from televised child abuse by their father. NO ONE PUT WORDS in this man's mouth. He behaved in a way that no sane person would. Perhaps focus groups and psychological testing may be the way to go before airing each episode to avoid a similar aftermath. ABC probably tries to weed the obvious crazies out but Fowler is evil which camouflaged itself as one of 'our own', but please do not mistake him for one. Unfortunately, thanks to the internet, he's living on one nightmarish groundhog day and has taken down everything he and his wife worked for down with him. Jane Goody from the British Version of Big Brother got nailed for making racist comments about a refined and beautiful Bollywood star. Her 'redemption' came a long time later and she was given a second chance by participating in the Indian verison of the same show (though that did not work out due to terminal illness). The only thing that Fowler may do to turn some of the disgust around is to be given an opportunity to partiicpate in another like program. I am sure that he will - he'll get paid handsomely, show his remorse and draw huge ratings. There seems to be little else he or Renee may do to turn things around. IF ABC has any 'guilt' over it, they will release him out of his gag clause soon and let him speak up sooner than later. Till then, the vids will pay to a new audience for a long time and draw the same reaction

Hi Victoriaipb, I guess I wasn't clear. Sorry about that.
I thought Gayla was exploited...not Fowler. ABC shouldn't have aired the show because they were purposely trying to play on stereotypes and get people angry. I felt they exploited her by putting her in that situation to begin with. What are they going to do next time? I'm really worried that ABC doesn't care about what happens to the people on the show. How could they let the filming continue? At some point they realized how bad he was...but yet they chose to keep going. I think they did it on purpose. And now that they have everyone in such a frenzy their ratings will go through the roof. It's a recipe that will encourage ABC to exploit more innocent women unless we say enough!
