I saw this episode and Stephen Fowler is a total DICK. He is so arrogant and thinks that he is so educated, that he doesn't even realize how stupid he looks and sounds. His wife is a weight management counselor and he still proceeds to call his guest-wife disrespectful names because of her weight. She was a great sport and she truly gave it her best. I can't help but feel bad for Stephen's wife, who is obviously afraid of him. She knows he is wrong and you can see the discomfort in her face when she hears about his pompous and evil behavior. She really needs to grow a spine and stand up to him. I wish the other husband would have beat his ass, but that would have just given him a reason to talk worse about Americans. Stephen should pack his shit and go back to England, where he be around the so-called "enlightened people", since he hates America so much. Why the hell is he even here?! Fuck Stephen Fowler! I hope he chokes on piss flavored tea and they find him laid out in the street with a crumpet shoved up his ass.

Why the public outcry over "offensive" remarks on a "reality show" during a time where we should be crying about mass rape in the Congo, 50 000 Iraqis we slaughtered for WMD we didn't find, a system that is vaporizing our economic wealth? It's simple: we feel so offended because he is speaking the truth. No question that the delivery is totally inappropriate. But yes - among first world countries, we have the least traveled population (yet claim to "lead" the world). We have the highest proportion of obese people (while being scared to shit by "terrorism" -we are killing ourselves with french - aaeehhh freedom fries. Did I mention education? It has been a while since I have met a fellow American capable of speaking another language (Hispanics don't count)or being able to find Greece (the birthplace of democracy) on a map. But I guess we will just continue to be "proud" Americans - whatever that is.

to marine: perhaps there were some points to be made not only by the Fowler's but by the other couple, I believe that is the purpose of the show. It takes an open mind to see where we could all improve. If a person has a point it is best recieved by respecting the person and not belittling them to make yourself feel better and bloat your ego. What do you expect by insulting people in the guise of making a point? Lets face it, how hard is it to find fault with anything or anyone? America certainly has its problems and it is a source of something to be proud of that we expose them and try to do what we can. What I think was so shocking about the episode with Fowler was how he did not seem to hesitate to insult and degrade the wife from Mo. in front of his children teaching them by example that it is okay to disrespect people for not measuring up to "Fowler" standards or for any reason. The adults will recover or not, who cares really. It was the Fowler children I felt sorry for. All this emphasis on elitist education, and the seemingly coached way they responded to their favorite foods. It was sad. Then to involve them in the fathers embarassing and childish behavior was the real tragedy.

No, we feel offended because he thinks that he is *better* and could not be bothered to lower himself to interact with a fellow human being in a dignified manner. Stephen Fowler is an example of the worthlessness of education! He may know a lot but he so glaringly misses the point, as do YOU.

Stephen Fowler will never change. In order for somebody to change, they have to realize that something's wrong and want to make it right. Stephen Fowler is far too Narcissistic and arrogant to realize or admit there's anything wrong with him.
Somebody posted a clip of South Park that showed San Franciscans so full of themselves they like to smell their own flatus. I don't point it out to blame Fowler's behavior on San Fran, just to make a point about the Fowlers and their kids.
What they didn't show was the part of that episode where the kids of those snobs hung out and chatted about how they needed to trip on acid just to deal with their snobbish parents. The show did it poking fun, but I think the message should be taken seriously. The Fowler kids will end up using drugs or turning to overt sexuality as a result of the abusive, overbearing way they're being raised. The tighter Fowler squeezes those kids, the more they'll slip between his fingers. Then he'll blame it on his wife's inferior American genes. And she'll agree with him. She obviously hates herself a great deal to put up with his controlling abusive rubbish. Let's not forget that she used to be overweight herself, probably with very low self-esteem. A perfect target for an abuser.
I feel sorry for Stephen if his wife ever grows a set of nads and takes control of her own life back. It's just a pity she won't do it for her kids.

In a similar position, I don’t like to think that I would ever say the things that Stephen Fowler said to anyone’s face. And certainly not on a TV show. I’d like to think that I could stand a couple of weeks in anyone’s company without resorting to that. Then I got thinking how she and her husband had pushed the whole “proud American” thing and I started to wonder – just what had NBC clipped? And just what were they so proud of, come to think of it?

Were they truly the stereotypical rednecks that the rest of the world has come to hate? This by virtue of the fact that they enabled Bush and pushed religious agendas to the forefront of American politics; which, in turn, prevents women having a realistic right to choose and stops HIV meds getting to Africa (not if condoms are mentioned in the literature at least). What editing did NBC do and did they purposefully portray them as innocent, delicate flowers of the American mid-west to further sensationalize Stephen’s (edited) behavior?

I’d have to guess the answer is yes. Otherwise why would such a well educated, successful guy just lose it like that? He’s obviously not an imbecile. Although his accent is from the wrong social class, he went to Oxford (that, in itself, speaks volumes for the man’s intellect if you know anything about Ox-Bridge politics). He sat on several boards, lives in one of the prime neighborhoods in the US and is a multi-millionaire. Sure he’s arrogant and a snob (self made men often are), but most of the world sees rednecks that way. The real question is what pushed his buttons to the point where he verbalized it to her face and on a TV show? The rest of us just see them waving their flags at Cheney and we quietly seethe inside.

If he ever sues NBC for purposefully editing to portray him in an unrealistic, negative light, and the court demands all footage to be shown, unedited; it would be a spectacular show. Dancing naked in the garden, burning Korans and shooting things up? Until then, we have only the footage that they chose to broadcast upon which to base our opinions; and – if I may borrow from the man himself - it’s not a good combination Stephen.

Last I heard, the mid-west had sent 400 assassins to the Bay Area. ½ never made it past the first liquor store, nearly all the rest dropped out over the next 20 miles and can be seen littering the highways, sucking back Mickey’s big-mouths standing around in wife-beater next to their overheated muscle cars. The one remaining is being pursued by Boss Hogg and isn’t expected to make it through Vegas. Come on guys, give it up. Just because a redneck insulted a western elitist doesn’t mean we’re going to vote in a black guy to fuck with your religious agenda … oh, wait a minute.

Yes I do dislike what Stephen Fowler said and how he treated Gayla in that particular episode but the really sad part is that there are men (and women too) who will belittle another person just because they think they're better than another. The keyword is that these people think that they're honestly better than most not on their level. I'm extremely educated, well-traveled, have musical talents that doesn't involve singing, and other characteristics that could possibly make myself a very elite individual but the difference between myself and others that act and think like Stephen is that I don't have an IQ of 158, sure as hell don't have a degree in anything and my parents didn't push me to become a perfectionist by slaving me in school and other things that aren't really important to children other than friends. I didn't go to a private school, I didn't live a "millionaires" lifestyle, and I don't live in a multi-million dollar home.
All "Wife Swap" do was shed some light to the country that there are a lot of people who think and act like Stephen Fowler but you don't see them on an everyday basis because they're out living their life the way that they want to live it while the rest of us regulars are struggling to make ends meet in more than one way.

Even people who love America are full of ignorant prejudice against those who don't live in NYC, LA or Miami, anyone who doesn't conform to the european way in fact.

We love to mock American stupidity and ignorance about the rest of the world. In fact, we spend most of our time looking for the speck in America's eye even though a forest is growing out of ours, but we're too stupid and ignorant to get it.

Edward R. We've seen Murrow's theory proven, all right. With some delightful modifications. Stephen Fowler not only proves that he thinks he's more intelligent (with or without the cameras), he's also proven that he's really quite the opposite. Not only is ne not intelligent enough to know when to keep his mouth shut, he's also stupid enough to mouth off in front of a camera, so that every self-respecting American knows what he looks like when they meet him.
Stephen, I've got a word of caution for you. Sooner or later, all of this blogging business will fade away, but there's bound to be at least one proud American that remembers very well how you spit on this great country, and you're bound to meet him someday. Good luck with that.

My main concern with this entire situation is the welfare of the child. A family that is capable of generating this sort of backlash from the general public will have a difficult time sheilding their innoocent daughter from the fallout.

I sincerely hope that this is the major focus in their lives at this time.....the 'woman from the midwest' who was the target of this man's non-sensical vitriol seemed to have a genuine positive influence on the child (when allowed). He should approach her on hands and knees, and beg her to spend a week or two (most privately) with their family to heal these wounds he has created, for the sake of the child.

Everyone also needs to find it in their hearts to forgive this man, and afford him the chance to grow and make restitution. We forgive many more major transgressions much more easily than we forgive arrogance. This man can change, and my heartfelt hope is that he is afforded the chance to do so, for his
    daughter's sake

If not for how welcoming, comforting and accommodating everyone was, I would have gone home. This Stephen Fowler is a disgrace. If he is so proud of his heritage, then why become a citizen of this wonderful country. For someone who claims intelligence, being elite and superior to others, you sure are a total disappointment. Sure America is not perfect, so is everyone else. I guess you do not have much experience of what is out there. Go to other countries and see if they treat you any better. Your country probably did not treat you as well, or you would not have moved here. What a SHAME! I come from a very loving family. Has yours neglected you so much that you have to keep proving to others how superior you are? That's too bad. I feel so sorry for you and your child who might just grow up like you or worst. And I cannot believe how your wife hust sat there and not said anything. Again, for someone to claim of having all these degrees, she totally demonstrated not knowing anything at all. And to say she is not proud to be American... what kind of intelligence is that? So ungrateful, arrogant, insensitive, uninspiring, uncaring, bitter people one would pray they would never, ever meet. One thing that makes me feel better after all of these is that there are more decent, respectful, caring, loving and God fearing people out there. And this is a good country with good people.
